For a Halloween parade coming up this Sunday, a few of us in New England put our brains together and made a (relatively) full sized Jabba the Hutt puppet. Anyone know how big the original was? Ours is about 11 feet long and about 6 feet tall.
3 people on the first day (Mark, Greg and Brian/me), then Mark ran with it for a while, building up the features on the face and tail. Mark and I did a big chunk of the skin, then I took it back to my place where Sean, Bob (webchief here) and Aaron joined in the fun. So 6 people and about $500 total.
This is definitely up there in the most fun projects list for me.
We based him on an amalgam of the various movie Jabbas (yes, we are acknowledging the SE footage and Phantom Menace!). The goal wasn't a 100% accurate representation of a particular shot, but getting the feel of him right.
The float theme is Jabba's Palace, so we'll have Bib, Max Rebo, Rystal, Oola, Boba, Boussh, etc...
Him before painting started (and missing an arm!)
And his oh-so-humble beginnings...
Construction is 90% foam as used to pad a mattress. 2" thick on the lower body, 1" on the upper and tail, and assorted bits of all sorts to make him lumpy.
The skin is spandex attached with spray glue.
The eyes are plastic bowls cut up and painted on the inside.
The arms, tail and mouth are movable if enough people are in there. It takes 3 to fully operate him. 2 on chairs in the body and one laying in the tail.
I've got a short clip of him moving here:

And a build up page at the NEG site with more progress pics, for those that are into that sort of thing.

Related to it is the Max Rebo costume that Aaron will be wearing, seen here being worn for the first time:
