Its A Phaser Jim - Almost

Ok here goes, I am attempting a scratch build of the new Star Trek Phaser, its in the very early stages, made up of foam board at the moment, crude - yes but handy in determining the basic shape, next up I will attack it brutally with filer and then probably make a rough cast of it to refine the shape

Final rough shape, a friend has offered to make a few resin copies so that I can refine it better, should make it a lot easier to work with :thumbsup

Hay that didn't sound like constructive criticism :lol . Any way we have a very unique situation here. So unique I keep thinking that it may be a set up. We have access to very nice pictures of an actual prop. This can help your build immensely.

If you have access to a printer, I suggest you print out said photo. I don't know why I can't get my camera to take a nice picture lately, but you can see from this picture that I printed out said photo so that from tip to tip it measures just under 10 inches. Then I cut the picture up and used the actual props dimensions. This will make your item much more accurate (if this is the real prop). Also if you don't own a set of calipers, pick yourself up a cheap one. You don't have to worry about hundredth of an inch but it will help you fool most peoples eyes.

Anyway send me a pm if I can help in anyway

Nice work so far.

I have that picture and calipers (I'm an engineer) and I think that photo is way oversized, but it is good reference. What I have right now is meant to be slightly larger than the finished article as I will be removing a lot of the material once I have my resin copy :thumbsup

I'm just going off of the grip itself, which appears to be 1/3 too long.

Well we don't really know that. I don't think anyone has said they have actually held the thing. Some of the old phasers had long handles I think that it's the size that I think it is because of the way it fits in my hand. My hands are just a little larger than every one I know so I try to take that into account. but my thumb sits just over the button, my trigger finger sits exactly where I'd put a trigger if I had built the thing, and the opening behind the handle contours to my wrist perfectly. If it was any smaller nun of these line would match up, and the same for if it was any larger.

So I think it's the size I think it is because it all works so well together for me. I could be completely wrong. But know one knows how big the thing is except the persons that built it, and I don't think they are talking.

Both projects are looking great so far! I almost want to make one myself!
How long do you estimate the phaser is? 10 inches seems a little big - maybe 9 or 8?

Yeah I mean I am only going by my own hand size, which is fairly small to be fair and scaling it to my own specfications, obviously if we had an exact measurement to go by then we could scale it to that

Yes, re-worked the overall shape somewhat, took around an inch off the length, its now just under 10 inches, and yes I have small hands :lol

That's looking great. How are you figuring the thickness of this thing ? I was guessing and using this as a loose reference.
