is this a recast??

No, it did actually sell to someone. He's pretty upset by it all. He's just e-mailed me as I had a silicone Palpatine mask project going on now for over a year. I hope he can get his money back. Kind of sad.

speaking of, how is that project goin Jesse

We are moving in making our third molds for the project. We had serious thickness issues in "thin" areas of the mask (around the cheeks, bottom of the chin and on the back of the skull). These could be patched for a while but would not hold up for regular use and, in that case, myself and my partner decided not to move forward until we had resolved the issue. Thanks to Madog's excellent sculpting skills, we've added more clay and resculpted the thin areas to give us the strength and thickness we needed to start with. Oh well, one learns by trying.....therefore, we tried, and learned and tried and learned....etc. :)

Given the resculpt has now been done and to improve our process time, we are moving towards a fiberglass mother mold system (dumping the gypsum) and also we have to make a couple of new plugs for our mask. All in all, we are looking towards having a newly designed mask for possible sale sometime in early August. We really only have the weekend to work on this thing, so moving on it quickly is virtually impossible. I work 10 hour days at my job and my partner is often tied up with other projects. I'm just glad some folks are being patient with us. I hope to have some updated pictures soon.

Thanks for asking about it.

Definately looking forward to it, as im goin to grow tired of glueing a prosthetic on my face for every troop. Will you guys do a reinforcement system (casted in mesh) around the eyes and mouth for support?

Yes, we are laying in PowerMesh, a dance type mesh material on the interior walls around the eyes, nose, mouth and ears to aid in structural support. The stuff is really good and is used by other companies that make these masks professionally, such as Composite Effects.

I'm actually wanting to stretch PowerMesh over most of the head to aid in support and structural integrity of the entire mask. I would also like to put it around the edges of the chest, for more support, but that decision is yet to be made.

I used to have a picture of this, but cannot seem to find it now. Sorry about that.

Jesse

yeah composite effects masks are the only silicone masks ive owned and those guys are awesome. Can't wait to see the mask project in full swing.

Totally feel sorry for the guy who bought it, the guy selling this one Hijacked the build thread for the AR one, so the guy who bought it THOUGHT he was getting the one in the AR build threads. Paypal claim was filed, I hope paypal does the right thing here, if they can understand what happened :(

we can only hope, that is quite a bit of money to lose over something no were near worth it....

I apologize for what I've done and am making it right. I didn't realize I was doing anything wrong but all in all I'm making it right.

I'm returning BH8957 money back to him via paypal.

Once again I'm truly sorry for making everyone upset I instantly made a mistake I was just selling a mask nothing more.

I have too, like BH8957, have also made the mistake of sending the mask to him before I received full payment to my account because he needed the mask before May 28th. I ask in return (since I'm doing the right thing by apologizing here and returning his money) that the mask be mailed back to me.

That's cool that you are refunding his money, no doubt. But that is only half of the issue. The other half is did you make the mask, or get it from someone else?

Fair is fair and I agree that the mask should be returned, but once you get the mask back it would look very bad if you tried to sell it again. That kind of quick response and understanding is a very stand-up thing to do. Welcome to the RPF, thank you for refunding the money to the buyer.

Please do clarify if you made those molds or not, and there are a lot of threads here discussing how we feel about recasting/stealing others' hard work. Do give 'em a read, and hope to see you become a productive member here instead.

I bought my sculpt from a guy in Plano Tx at Star Wars fan days 2009. He said he had sculpted it and made it himself and was selling it to me for $145 because a piece of the nose was broke off and one ear was completely gone. I thought he was selling me an original work cause he said it was and I believed I was buying the original owner's work. I had NO idea that he was selling me someone else's work in this case JRX's. So I was fooled there. I re-sculpted the nose and ear looking off pictures of Ian McDiarmid, and fixed it up myself. Once I bought it and repaired it.. well I thought it was mine to do so and I told the man I had bought it from what I was going to do with it. He even gave me his email address and said when I was done to sell him a mask. Don't worry I haven't sold him a mask. As to what I said about "DON'T compare my work to makeup artist's like Stuart Freeborn, Rick Baker or Tom Savini. I'm just getting started at this painstaking process of time and money and ENJOY doing it!!" I was stating the look and makeup work of the silicone mask. I'm NOT INTO recasting from somone's original work. I WASN'T even planning on making a run of the mask. I've already spoken to my Commanding Officer about this via a phone call this morning. I am to very sad cause it went from "Great job kid." to "You're crook!" so I am deeply humiliated by my mistake and apologize for making the mask and selling it. I was selling a mask I thought looked worth selling to someone who wanted it and not to steal someone's money or steal someone's work. I'm sorry for the price. I'm terribly sorry to my fellow 501st members, to selling it to BH8957, for posting it on Darth Movado and MADOG's thread and to JRX who originally sculpted it. I am sorry. Please forgive me.

Well, it would seem like you were duped and at least you told the person who you thought created it what you were doing and had his permission. Obviously knowing now that it wasn't his work to begin with it would be very wrong to sell anymore of these. But your best option, since you started down this path is to start creating things from scratch. You say you resculpted parts looking at pics of Ian McDiarmid, why not try starting one from the ground up? Once, you'll know for certain that you are not casting someone else's work, and you'll have the satisfaction of creating something yourself.

Darthslick has made amends, and I'm good with that. I'm trying to track down the original culprit in this, the guy from Plano, TX.

He mentioned FanDays, wonder if its a vendor? Just talking it up like he made it just to make the sale... Noticed several booths of recasted resin stuff at many Convention dealer rooms lately, MegaCon and D*C mainly resin gun props... some Indy stuff too at a table that barely had any advertising as to the fact they were even selling anything.

The great thing about the RPF is learning how to spot stuff, its something I never would have thought about 3-4 years ago when I was first making my own stuff and not really thinking anyone didnt make their own stuff. I would have just taken everyones word on stuff at conventions. After I joined here, even lurking the first year, I realized how wrong that is.

The money has been refunded to my account as per the claim, and I'm waiting for it to clear. When the mask shows up, I'll absolutely refuse to accept it so it goes right back to him. No way would I decide to keep it after all this. I'm an honest person, and it's kind of insulting that someone would even suggest otherwise. Just because I almost got ripped doesn't mean I would do it right back. What's right is right and according to paypal, he's refunded, so he gets it back. No fuss no muss.

Thank you all for your support during this in and out of the legion. It's very much appreciated! :cool

I am glad this whole incident worked itself out. Hopefully someone will find the true recaster in then end.

didnt JRX sell the molds to someone? maybe even the molds have been sold twice..I'd say whom I think owns the molds right now, but dont want to say it pubically. I was offered first to purchase his Leia, Emperor and one other mold...Obiwan maybe? but before he did sell the molds, JRX made a deal with me to buy like 6-7 of the emperor castings, which I still have like 3 of them...

but when the molds are being sold around, or out of JRX's hands, its very hard to know anymore if its considered recasting, because doesnt the rights to produce it go with the new owner of the molds?
