Hi All,

I am waiting on some Gene Simmons scales. They are thick vinyl but black. I need to do them silver. I checked Wal Mart pep boys and auto zone for paint. i saw some vinyl fabric paint at the car store but the closest they had was light grey.

Is there something else, or can I use regular spray paint, but very light coats?

how silver is silver - matte silver or like polished aluminum silver? And how much flexing is involved?

If the piece won't be flexing much, use and acid etch primer (sometimes sold as self etching, available at most auto parts stores) and then use regular automotive silver paint.

If it's going to be flexing all over the place, you may want to consider aluminum repair tape. It's fairly reflective, but highly adhesive so it won't just fall off after a few hours.

If it helps any, I just spray painted a thick vinyl Robocop mask with regular Dupli-Color auto spray, it stuck very well and came out nicely. You may not need a special vinyl paint, but it of course depends. I took a chance and it paid off. Check it out in the recent robocop prop thread. You can find DC paint at any Autozone or Pep Boys and online at Space Age Paints.

they are going to be on my legs, so I would think a lot of flexing.

i will try the silver paint. I figure if it lasts a night, it is ok, then I can strip it when I find a better way.

Matte silver is fine. It doesn't need to reflect at all.

If you're ok with matte silver and there'll be a lot of flexing, you can also try looking for bumper paint. It's the paint used for car bumpers, so it's pretty flexible stuff. And since almost all bumpers are color matched to the cars these days, it should be available in a wide variety of colors.

If you have a hobbytown, they carry an acrylic silver by Tamiya. It won't react to the vinyl. :) Testors acrylics will also work. I'd suggest applying with an airbrush, but you can always paint with a brush.

Duplicolor makes a medium Silver Bumper paint.

You might try that with a light mist of Testors Metalizer on top. The metalizer might give it a little sheen but thin enough not to chip off.

you can also try looking for bumper paint.

I don't know if you have an Automotive paint store locally, but they should sell vinyl paint in a spray can. The one here locally has silver.
you could also buy a bottle of silver Acrylic paint at a craft store.
or like said before, use a good automotive primer and then you can use enamel spray. if you don't use a good primer first, the enamel will make it sticky.
I bet the scales them self won't flex that much.
Rub and buff would also work good as mentioned.

Rub n'buff is probably the best choice, mechanically, but it's very labor intensive. If you've got a couple of old t-shirts and a few hours to spare, it would probably be your best alternative.

Go locally to someplace that does shoe or leather repair.

They make a special spray paint for leather and vinyl. They also use it to quickly re-color women's shoes. It's called "Magix". It comes in about 50 different colors (including silver). They have it at both of the local places that does that sort of thing here. I'm not all that that big of a metropolis, so I'm guessing that you should be able to find some place in your area that has it. Here's a link to where it can be ordered though:

I've used it successfully in painting leather in a way that makes it looked dyed, and it doesn't flake off.

I have been using SEM for 25 years and stand by it.
I have painted everything from vinyl model kits to auto carpet and seats, bike seats etc....Their site has a "where to buy" link as well as a color chart.

The stuff is amazing. They even have fleuible clear gloss and flat.

OK Found something. Turns out there was a shoe repair place around the corner, I had no idea about!

$7.99 a can, got two just in case. A little more expensive than above but, it was right here.;)

Thanks for all of your help!

Actually, when I was searching, it was the Nu-Life stuff I was looking for but couldn't remember what it was called. That's the product they have here locally, but the Magix stuff seems to be pretty much the same.

I've had good results with the Nu-Life.

Very cool.

I got word that the scales were finished and shipping tomorrow.

Hopefully I can get it all done in time for Sat.
