Is there a hardware tutorial for an Aliens M40 grenade?

Long time prop collector, but new to Aliens props. I've seen a few different resin M40 grenades around, and most a very low prices. Still I was wondering if there was a tutorial on how to make one. (preferably using parts from the hardware store, and metal would be nice too.)

If there is nothing like that out there, if someone could post the measurements I maybe able to come up with something myself. (I would of course post whatever I would come up with. :) )

The originals (and subsequent copies) were turned on a lathe. I'm sure it'd be less bother for you to buy them from the various makers out there.

There IS a hardware tutorial that turned out a grenade that looked fantastic (if not 100%) I just can't remember where it is at the moment :( Anyone know which one I'm talking about?

I put out one a while back, but have since started buying the machined ones when they pop up.
I used a wooden dowel which fit snugly inside a steel pipe. I then cut the pipe into short rings which could be spaced to simulate the cuts of the lathe. The last ring is dremmeled with a jagged edge. Then a washer is glued to the back to complete the look. Then just buy some caplugs for the red part and paint or use white tape for the ring.
I would add that I still like my homemade ones but love the machine turned ones I bought.
Some of the ones I bought actually have a spring loaded plunger to press.

The knurling would be the hard part, I don't know how else that could be done other than on a lathe.

That sound good, and I usually have most of that stuff laying around here. :) Do you have any measurements to share? (steel pipe size, over all length, etc. ? )

It would be plastic, but for the knurling, there are a lot of different kind of plastic knurled screw on bottle caps. if you could find one with the right side, and shape, it would only take a second or two with a Dremel to cut the inside part of the cap out to fit the Dowel. (Or what ever you wanted to use for the inner part. )

Nothing like getting advice from the MAN (Harry harris ) if you want to know aliens ,there's harry and then there's his website ( thought i was gonna say god didn't ya) lol.. check out the aliens legacy , there was just a post form a guy who made some out of shotgun snap caps >>

Does anyone know of a good place to get the red caplugs? Lowes? Ace? etc.

I did buy one SDStudios M-40 Grenade, and it is very, very, nice, but I have a couple of replica ammo/grenade boxes I would like to fill up. At 25 grenades each, it would be WAY to expensive to fill them with machined grenades, so I'm returning to the idea of make hardware grenades.

There are resin grenades available cast with a metallic powder. Give it a polish and they have a fairly good metal finish. And much cheaper than the machined versions.
