Is there a decent OTC Spiderman mask (comic style)?

I have a friend who's birthday is coming up, and I want to surprise him.

His favorite cover as a kid was one of venom holding up a skull with a spiderman mask on it (think the story was something like they were on a desert island and Peter found a skeleton and put his costume on it, and then somehow blew up the area with natural gas or something, basically the only thing I really remember was Venom was chillin on the beach now happy that Spidey was toast)

So... I have a skull, I have a torch, I have about 20-30$, I have some paint. All I really need is a decent spidey mask to mutilate and maybe add some cracked "lens" effect to, and he has a nifty new dust collector.

I saw one that looked ok, but all the reviews said the webbing was all kajiggered up on the front.

thanks
Chris

This is one of the most decent over-the-counter masks, if you replace the lenses.
It's probably the one you were referring to with kajiggered webbing in the front, as in the video review, but it's normally lined up well and I'm sure you could ask for a replacement if the one you receive is wonky, I've seen this mask used several times and the mouth/nose area looked fine. Besides, that's all torn away in your reference picture anyway.

Yup, that's the one.

I was worried because the mouth and nose area looks like it's sewn so that the back part of the head is using that same strip of cloth. I know the front is mostly missing on the pic, but the back will still be there.

I'll check it out and see what I can dig up :)

Thanks!

Personally, I would just grab a zentai blank mask (Link)

That way, you can paint the lines and cut the mask up.

Good luck with the project!

That's pretty awesome!

I'm a little hesitant for that design though, since it seems like the material would just shrink up once it's been cut. The disguise mask looks like it's in a couple of pieces, so less chance of it being so elastic.

Appreciate the help though :)

I actually have the red one that I linked. I don't think it would shrink after cutting. I might be able to snap a shot tonight, both on a mannequin and off.

Cool. Haven't bought a mask yet, so any pics are greatly welcome :)

Sorry, I took the pics. Just didn't post them.

Here:

You have to be careful about fabric pens as they tend to bleed. I haven't tried a thin sharpie yet, or puff paint.

This option would just take a little more work to paint up.

So I decided to mark up the mask similar to how it is shown in your picture. I used a black fabric pen for this:

Then, I figured what the heck, and continued. Here is the start of it cutting out the holes:

Then even more:

The lens is a B-grade lens I picked up from TJack. I have a pair of them.

Not sure I am going to keep going, but you get the picture.

If you want this one to continue, I could send you the lenses, mask, and pen.

The mask has some marks on the neck where I was playing around before. If you cut it to the shape in your picture, all that would be cut off anyway.

I hope this helps.

Looks awesome. I dig it.

I'm probably gonna keep a side portion of the mask on there to act as a band to keep it on the skull.

Shoot me a PM about how much you want for the kit, and I'll see if it's in the budget :)

Chris

PM sent.

That is what I was thinking for the right side (left when looking at it). It would need a band to keep it all together.

Some quick/dirty pics of the wip

The eye doesn't really set well with the skull as far as keeping the mask correct on the head, so I think I'm either going to try to warp it a bit more, or just cut one out of black foam material and use that. Haven't decided yet.

Either way, it's looking pretty cool :)
