Is the underside of an X-wing unpainted or what?

Hey red4...

how about a "I am sorry for having been a PITA" or at least a "Thanks for providing the information I was looking for"!?
You surely know how to make friends...:facepalm

Just 2 cents here; in airbrushing, when doing chrome technique, absolutely NO mettalic colors are used. Look at Sorayamas work. Also look at Gundam model kits which are frequntly painted in grey scales that can have a scale mettalic quality to them. Also when painting over a black base all kinds of things come into play like transparency in coverage and layering for which X-wings are notorious. All this proves is the exceptional paint skills of craftsmen working on both tight budget and time restrictions. Just sayin' s'all.

:lol Lovin this. The ILM models are obviously the hero ships. If the full size ships are the defacto, then the falcon would only be 2/3 built and everyone would be sucked out into space :lol

The UK builders were building from the ILM models or photographs and drawings of said. If you want to build a replica of the full size, then I guess you would have to start from scratch as no kit would have the correct proportions to the carpentry versions built on set. If you want it metallic then paint it metallic... I don't understand what the problem is? If you wanted to do a Bob Falfa P*ss yellow one then that would be cool too! ( I would quite like to see a 60's custom x wing...COOOOL or what )

When I approach a model of a craft, sci fi or otherwise, all I can do is get all the research I can and build it the way it appears to be for me. Its the best you can do, but I must say that the evidence on the X wing is so solid ( white and weathered ) that this would be the way to go for me too. But as they say...Life is like a box of Chocolates...you might get a soft centre, a marzipan, a coffee or a nut.

Thought for the day.

Don't know if anyone noticed but Red4 changed his initial post / question about a week ago... Hmm... a certain Jack Nicholson quote from "A Few Good Men" springs to mind :devil

On a lighter note, I have found this thread to be both interesting and informative, thus I would like to thank everyone for sharing some great info! Definitely going to make an X-wing my next project. Might even try making a few in different colors schemes... however I doubt I will go for a raw metal look ;)

Cheers everyone!

Nevermind. You guys are extremely passive aggressive.
Wow yeah. I'm sorry you feel that way. I think most people on here were trying to offer up the best information we have come up with, after all the years of studying these ships.

I have to agree with what others have said here as well: the original "1/24" models are the basis upon which the other incarnations are based ("1/12" ROTJ, lifesize set pieces, etc.), which makes the original models the de facto X-Wings IMHO and all other representations derivative. :)

Wow, that was an over-reaction and a half. Nobody here was remotely a bully - rather, expert, helpful and tolerant in the face of stubborn contrarianism. SMH...
