Is it better to have a scale model signed directly or a base/plaque?

I am getting into collecting autographs and was thinking of having some of my scale models signed, however I don't know if it would be better from a logistical point of view and or aesthetically to have the bases or the 'name' plaques signed as opposed to the model itself? What do you guys think?

I don't like the idea of bringing in a 1/350 Enterprise to be signed by Shatner; the base would be way easier but is that as cool?!

Personally, I wouldn't want marker on my scale model so I would always go for a signature on the base. Like, if I have a cool, accurate model I want it to stay pristine.

Maybe have them sign a very nice picture of the scale model? Then display the picture with the model as a collection.
That way there's also kind of a neat aspect that the signer saw a picture of your lovingly made prop?

I've no idea which way adds more financial value to the whole thing though.

When I see someone show a prop or model on here that has a big signature on it, to me you ruined your item. You do you, but it bugs me even if I didn't pay for it! I would always have a plaque signed.
