Is it bad taste to wear a vader suit to comic con?

And the best way to change things if there are unpleasant people in your local garrison is to join and be as awesome as you can be and encourage everyone else in the local garrison to be, as well.

I go to Mega con and Tampa con every year. I have friends that range from wearing nothing to entering contests and we encourage anyone and everyone to wear whatever you want. Halloween costumes, home made etc. Cons are about having fun. I'm looking forward to going to Celebration next year in Orlando :D

I went to comic con this year as Dengar and my fiance was Boushh. We worked really hard on our costumes and we got a ton of compliments from everyone. Except one dude.... He was a 501st memeber. He stopped me as i was walking just to tell me how my costume would never make it into the 501st.

We did also meet one other guy who was pretty excited about my costume. He asked a lot of questions about how i did certain parts and was an over all nice guy.

That's a sick build! I understand the strict requirements of the 501st, and other groups like the Mando Mercs, but you have to admit there's a certain amount of irony in making replica costumes, likely of greater production quality of the originals, and chastising any lesser because they suffer from the imperfections, like the originals.

I mean, just look at the differences between the 32 inch and 5 foot Falcon models. Even the studios don't get it perfect.

You don't have to join the 501st to wear a costume, and you shouldn't worry and stress about meeting their requirements if you don't intend to join. Build the projects, and work on the detail for your own satisfaction and fanaticism of the source material.

Some people are happy with a Rubie's kit, and others like to invest lots of time, energy, and love into their builds. We're all fans, I don't see why some of us are looked down upon by others.

I should check in here. im a 501st member and went to a con in my sandtrooper, but I just walked around and didn't go to hang with my legion brothers. I paid for my own ticket. had I accepted a 'vendor pass' then id have been obligated to stand by the backdrop for pictures. I didn't get any gripe from my legion buddys for not hanging with them, I was there at my own volition and theres no problem wearing a legion suit around casually.

on the other side, I also made my friend a kanan jarrus costume, it wasn't my best work but everyone who watched rebels knew who he was. he said that a rebel legion member approached him wanting to join since their squad doesn't have a kanan, but like others who have posted here, that member had almost immediately belittled the costume for being made of foam and the slacks having pockets etc.

my advice whether 501st or rebel legion members, please don't be rude to blatently come down on someones work UNLESS the wearer actively asks "would this be good enough to join" etc questions, but that should be common sense. And to the general public who wears the rubies boba fett/stormtrooper/vader who we know are inaccurate costumes, there aren't any rules saying you cant wear that. cons are about community and presenting your works as such. just focus on you, and have enjoy yourself.

I scratch built a Vader and wore it to a Film Screening of TFA, its not the most accurate but when i got home some members of the local 501st messaged me on Facebook and commented if i wanted to join saying that my suit was great as is and only needed some upgrades to be 501st acceptable. they and some members of the local Rebel Legion were also at the Film screening but i did not get any negative comments during the event, had a chance to take pics with some of them , I am now upgrading my Vader in hopes of being part of the garrison.they are great people with charity work in their hearts. but yeah, there will always be that one guy who will be a jerk regardless of what group they belong to. don't mind those kind of people and just do what makes you happy.;) ( oh and my Vader is taller than the current Vaders of the group so maybe thats a plus for me :) )

The thing is... A convention (or movie opening or book store signing) is a public event, where anyone can wear whatever they want. The good 501st (and other clubs) members I've run across have, when someone in a homemade Star Wars costume (of any quality) comes up to them or their table, or who they run across while out wandering the con, they're encouraging and appreciative. They've got a smile and a "good job!" and their goal is to make that person feel like a million bucks. Only if they are asked about whether they could join do things get into the nitty of the gritty, with what would need to get swapped out or redone or tweaked or whatever. And it's a whole different context. It's no longer un-asked-for advice/criticism. But it requires club members to not be in an automatic mindset of "everyone wants to join". Rather, "everyone's here to have a great time". Tends to make things better for everyone.

Just to add another "me too", I'll agree with most others here: the 501's and Rebel Legions I've encountered have all been super nice. Seem like good groups to join.

The legion guys even gave me a ton of help researching my own Han Solo costume (they are the ones who originally pointed me to RPF). Someday I may join...my costume is accurate enough, I just haven't out of laziness. Even so, when I see them at cons, everyone is just having a good time. Never seen anyone get bent out of shape about what someone else is wearing.
