Is it bad taste to wear a vader suit to comic con?

your going to find allot of that in this hobby, some people have no common sense of respect for others

I'm glad to hear you say this. I want to believe most 501st people are as awesome as you, and not like the one who had to tell my little kid how inaccurate his blaster was.

YES ,IT WAS THE TOY E11 BUT I PAINTED THE CRAP OUT OF IT, JERK!

annnnnnd this is why i don't want to join...

I'm not in the 501st or Rebel Legion, but I still wear my Han gear to cons. I've heard a few of the members make negative comments (despite my Han stuff most likely meeting the highest requirements), but other than that - to everyone else you are just cosplaying...

Who cares? Wear what you want/have the ability to make/can afford. If anyone really cares it is their problem - not yours.

Have fun!

It's not in poor taste to dress like your favorite character at a convention even if there is a Garrison of 501st or Rebel Legion members attending the same venue. More often than not if they see you they will probably approach you about your interest in joining their ranks.

I'm not a part of the Rebel Legion or the 501st and they have always been receptive to me when I've crossed paths with them dressed as Luke or Obi-Wan.

The point of a convention is that you can go dressed in whatever costume you want and just be yourself. But most important have fun with it. : )

I never understood people who would go as far as to tell a child that their props are "not accurate"... Wear it all!

When it went to see TFA day one, i saw a kid (probably 8 years old) leaving the theater in a little kids stormtrooper suit - sans mask, due to stupid theater rules) and walked over and told him I loved it. Made his day. Even his parents loved it. I wasn't even going for that, just wanted to let him know i thought it was cool. I got loads more from that than I ever could telling a kid his prop wasn't accurate.

That's what it should be about. It is, after all, a hobby! I just could never get behind those guys that take it too seriously.

Seeing as I am not part of the 501st... Is it bad taste to wear a vader suit, when their is bound to be a 501st vader walking around?

Not sure where you live, but any garrison would be falling over themselves to get a nice, tall Vader to join (regardless how many they may already have). The first year that I joined, I helped out at our garrison booth at Phoenix Comicon when I wasn't in costume. A guy dressed as Darth Maul was hanging around our area talking to us and taking pictures with people. He joined up not too long after that. Nice guy with a great costume.

It's likely that the 501st will have some people at the convention you're attending. I'd encourage you to talk to them and get a feel for them. If you don't click, no problem - but I think it's worth exploring to possibly contribute to the non-convention related events they do. Locally, we have a fantastic group of people and I've made some great friends. And for me, trooping hospitals and fundraisers gave the whole thing a sense of purpose that I'd miss if I was just doing cons or parties.

A few years ago, I was watching the Dragon*Con parade down Peachtree, and just in front of me was a family with a young boy dressed in a Halloween-quality clonetrooper outfit. As the 501st came marching by, just about every member on our side of the street made a point to walk over and either shake hands with or salute the boy. It made MY day, so I can only imagine how the kid felt.

:thumbsup

As a 501st member I don't care, so long as whatever you're doing in your costume doesn't affect me. You're just like everyone else at a Con. I treat everyone with a certain degree of mutual respect, so don't take my comment as a negative. There are, however, people that I've come across who were not members of the 501st, who'd do very questionable things in their personal star wars costume only to have it come back to US, the 501st, as being the "culprit" for their actions.

Case in point?

We had a Embassy Suites that we used during a major convention in Orlando. There's another costuming group, the "wolf pack," which is one of those "all-inclusive" exclusive clubs. They had a huge party at this hotel, resulting in some significant complaints, damage IIRC, etc.. Who got banned from ever using the hotel ever again? The 501st did.

Mind you, this hotel, our garrison has held great relationship with this specific hotel that they'd bend over backwards for us. What happens? Another costume group that people mistook for the 501st gave us the repercussions of other people's actions.

Funny, I've had a similar question in my head for years. Made the massive error a few years ago of buying a Rubies Stormtrooper costume in a Halloween store on a spur of the moment whim. I wasn't even aware of the 501st (or more sadly Rubie's reputation! ;p)) I'd just always wanted one since I was a kid. Finally sold it recently because I bought the Anovos kit but I can't deny there's this weird little voice inside my head that questions my 'right' to be wearing it for Halloween etc, as a non 501st member. I've no idea where that little voice comes from honestly.

As I think about it, I probably would be interested in the 501st, but I'm just super wary of the commitment because I've a really busy job and 2 kids and hobbies outside of work already I suppose.

That anecdote sucks tubachris85x

I don't know anybody in either of my clubs who would diss a kids costume, or an adults for that matter, unless the person specifically asks for advice. We just enjoy the effort.

I will say that Vader can really use a handler, or at least a friend nearby.

This is a con. Nobody cares. The only time it would be in bad taste is if it were a Sexy Vader type costume with assless chaps and a cowboy hat at a kid-friendly event.

Yes, I have had the misfortune of seeing this particular monstrosity (though thankfully not at a kid-friendly event), and I nearly poured a bottle of muriatic acid into each eye as a cleanser.

That was very much unprofessional behavior on that person's part. I would have flagged down their garrison leader and told them about it, as that kind of behavior, especially towards a child, reflects poorly on the organization as a whole.

Old thread but hey:

I'm putting together a Vader build I've wanted for who knows how long.
That day is now.

So I thought I would add to this thread.

I could care less about accuracy or matching movie Vaders.
I could care less about joining 501st. or any other troop. [which could be fun]
I could care less what anyone thinks of me, even now I don't care.
I will wear it when and where I want. [within reason of course]

If I come to a Con in my Vader suit and see another I will walk up to him and call him a traitorous clone and a rebel spy and that I sense his lack of faith! ;)
Or I might just say "Father is that you?" as I walk by...

Point being no one has any right to tell you anything or what you can and cannot do or be! Haters are everywhere don't empower them!
Be Big Vader, Tall Vader, Short Vader, Cardboard Vader, Deadpool Vader who cares just do it...

Its your decision, but honestly not a great reason not to join. Every group, public or private has its share of asshats. Most people there are like most people elsewhere, good well meaning folk.
