Is DVD now dead?

I´ve seen three important Bluray announcements: LOTR trilogy extended, Star Wars complete saga and Superman 8 disk edition, and none of them mention DVD edition. Is DVD out of the game?

That could be because all 3 of your examples already exist on regular DVD but not on Blu-Ray yet.

That said, I haven't bought a DVD in ages, and don't really plan to unless I want something NOW and there's no Blu-Ray equivalent on the horizon. And I don't even have Blu-Ray or HD (but I know I will in the not-too-distant future).

Nevermind, wrong thread.

EDIT 2: Well as long as I'm here. I haven't even replaced all my VHS with DVD's yet. So I'm a dinosaur.

No!

Hell I still tape stuff on TV with S-VHS when I need to catch a show I can't download.

:lol and I thought I was the only one with a working and integrated to my home theater system S-VHS.

As long as that puppy still works I'll use it:thumbsup It's more useful than my DVD recorder at this point.

I've got some satellite recordings on S-VHS but no longer have a player.

B5, LIS, LOTG, The Night Stalker a few others. All recorded off the Sci-Fi channel back when they showed Sci-fi.

Pay the shipping they are yours. Could even go media mail (super cheap and super slow).

Not according to Netflix... just about everything I want to see is only available on DVD with no streaming.

Just about every release I see always still says "available on DVD and Bluray, Tuesday." The "important" Bluray releases you mentioned are already available on DVD. And most of those releases are so far out that there's no real need to even mention DVD if there is a joint release.

I just bought an HDTV about a month ago, my first one. I also got a blu-ray upscaling player. I haven't bought any BR disks yet, but I'm amazed at the quality of the upscales DVD's. Mine is currently set to upscale to 1080i because I havent had the time to figure out how to switch it to 720p but even like this it's so clear and life-like.

I have no plans to replace any of my DVD's with BR, but moving forward I'll be buying the BR version. I would expect over the next 4-5 years new releases will still be combo packs, but I think it will be all BR after 5 more years.

I still don't have Bluray either. I watch just about everything on OnDemand. I stopped buying any movies until I get a new player for this reason though.

PM sent. :)

I still buy DVD, unless the BR/DVD bundle is around the same price, or if I really liked the film.

"Technosaur". I like it! Yeah, I still have a cassette player in the truck, with an adapter so I can plug in the satellite radio or iPod. And I haven't even started converting my VHS collection.

Heck, I still have an old Radio Shack 8-Track *recorder* down stairs that may or may not work...

Just you wait until you buy your first Bluray... You'll be addicted!

I was in the same boat that I bought my first HDTV this year (a 60" Sharp). And my Step-Daughter and Son in law bought me a Bluray player for Xmas (something I swore I'd never get).

Dvds looked pretty damn good on it. Then I bought my first Bluray.

I was blown away!

Now I'm totally addicted! I have to eventually replace my collection of 200+ dvds with Blurays! :wacko

I'm trying my best to be frugal about it. Most of the titles I have are older movies and can be bought for an average of 20 dollars or less on Bluray. But I try to wait until they go on sale for $10-$15. Or I hit ebay for "like new" deals. Ten bucks is my limit for a gently used Bluray.

And I figure I can live with upconversion when it comes to a comedy or drama. But Sci-fi and action is a must on Bluray!

Just you wait man; you're gonna love it! :thumbsup :D

As for me- I'll never buy a dvd again unless it is an out of print title that will probably never be released on bluray. So yeah: dvd is dead to me.
