Iron Man Mark 8 Helmet ( Biggeek 1972 )

Hey gang! I know that everyone is sick of IM stuff ( grovel grovel ) but i recently had the chance to purchase one off of Biggeek1972. The helmet was molded off an incredibly accurate 3d model. The cast is beautiful and I could not recommend it enough! Just make sure it fits your head!!!!!!

Of course, though...every cast has it's little imperfections. After an initial coat of white I primer I started the spot filling.

There weren't any dents in the cast but a few spots had some bubbles. Nothing 20 minutes of filling can't fix.

You guys know the drill. Fill, sand.....primer.

Both of my cans of primer ran out while I was priming, hence the odd speckled nature of the helmet At the moment.

I don't have much left to do on this helmet. Magnets and paint. More to come.:)

Thanks guys.

I ordered a bunch of magnets for the faceplate and back piece, I'm running out of time and a hinge system isn't in the cards for right now. I should be selecting my paints this week.

Exciting! Can't wait for mine.

I noticed you're using Krylon primer. What colors will you be finishing it with?

Took a few steps forward today as well as a few steps backward. First, I finished the sanding of the main piece of the helmet and threw it under some grey primer.

Now here's the issue. The red is just a smidge too bright.

The flash on my camera makes it look like a can of Coke but it is actually quite rich in person....just a LITTLE too bright.

I'm trying to decide if I should try to darken the red with some acrylic washes or just repaint the thing.

I'll figure it out. Other than that, smooth sailing.

Looks wonderful! Plan on having the faceplate motorized?

Not for the time being. I'm still learning my way around electronics, and I don't think there's enough room in the helmet for it anyway.

I have some magnets on the way which will be used for the faceplate.

I love Biggeeks work its amazing - very crisp and accurate - I have two helmets on order from him - possibly three :D

Just got my 3D printed helmets - I ordered both the Iron Patriot and Mark VIII. Awesome detail and symmetry! A couple bubbles but no big deal.
I like them, but only problem is neither of them come close to fitting my 23.5" head.
Doh!

Yes, it is a really tiny helmet, it JUST fits my head!!!

After giving the paint time to cure, as well as a wash or two of black acrylic, I'm liking the red much more now...I may just leave it for now to save myself the time of repainting it.

The faceplate is starting to warp out of shape just slightly...it's not very noticeable but I sure as hell notice it, so I will probably be heating the piece and trying to pull it back to shape. :D

Almost finished! I give it two weeks at the most.

Sorry to hijack the thread but its a kit and doesn't fit everyone's head. If you use a grinder/dremal and grind out some of the material I put in there it will fit, tuck your ears back. :) the IP has been on a 24" head before and the Mark VIII should be made to fit a 23.5" head ;)

And nice work by the way :)

Ya, I think thats what I'll have to do. Looks like I could get out about 1/4" on each side which might be enough.

Got my magnets in today.

These things are really strong. Scary strong.

Drillin holes.

I glued the magnets in with a fast setting two part epoxy...worked very well.

I also managed to put magnets in the faceplate and test it out...it works well, the only issue is that it's quite tough to remove the faceplate with the magents, because they are just so freaking strong. But I'm guessing that's a good thing, I'd hate to have the faceplate fly off while i'm wearing it.

More to come.
