Iron man Helmet WIP

Re: Iron man Helmet, New to this, NEED HELP!

Not trying to be a wet blanket, but if you have never molded anything before, I don't think you are going to want to start with a full helmet. You would probably gain nothing but a bucket of frustration and some wasted cash.

There is tons of great info on the whole process here and on other websites. Begin by going to sites like http://www.smooth-on.com/faq.php? which will answer a lot of questions about materials and techniques. Take a few hours and actually read the entire FAQ. It will make you much more confident in how to proceed.

Start small and work your way up, and good luck!

EDIT: Scratch that, didn't realize you didn't mean pepping the helmet. I need to read things through more.

I would disagree. The first REAL thing I ever pepped was the Ironman Mark III Helmet that I posted pics of the other day (see my profile to find the post). I say go for the helmet only because even if you wind up with a bucket of frustration, you learned somethin right? To quote Tony Stark "Jarvis, sometimes you've gotta run, before you can walk" Said just before the Mark II test flight in the first movie. Here's a link to the pep I used. Best one out there as far as I'm concerned, no offense to any of the others I just like sharkhead's the best.

Just click download and save it somewhere you'll find it (made the mistake of not doing that. Caused 15 minutes of gnashing my teeth and beating my keyboard) Best of Luck!

Re: Iron man Helmet, New to this, NEED HELP!

Thanks for all the replies and thanks for your concern Jmtwo!

I don't know what you mean by molding, the glassing and bondoing? or making a mold of it when im done to make replicas?(what is this called if its not molding), but i was never the type of person to play it safe and it has served me well thus far :] i know it wont be exactly the way i want it hte first time around but ill have fun doing it and if it turns out good thats a plus! :D

UPDATE: I just finished pepping it and it looks awesome! to me at least. My head cant fit in the hole though so i cut it in half to see if ill fit it in later and ill probably find a way to get in it once its glassed. maybe making the chin removable. I don;t really want to pep that thing again what a pain! and i dont even own the pepakura viewer to change the scale, oh well. I would post a picture but theres already 1000 pictures of pepped ironman helmets hehe. I will start the hardening process tomorrow yay!

He's talking about making a mold, as in the silicone with a glass jacket. From there you can cast your copies, you got it I think. :)

Yep your right your heads not supposed to fit in it when it's all together, you'll need to make it in a few pieces. Some do the chin, I made mine in 3 pieces. Faceplate, tp main helmet and the bottom section split at the top cut line about mid ear. :)

Re: Iron man Helmet, New to this, NEED HELP!

thanks for the heads up finhead, How do you keep it connected? Im guessing magnets? Ill probably split it at the jawline like in the movie.

Re: Iron man Helmet, New to this, NEED HELP!

Yes it will be magnets. :)

Problem with splitting it at the jaw line is if you decide you want to make the jaw pull down with electronics, you wont be able to remove it any longer. :)
One with the back bottom piece in place, just friction fit (it slipped down a bit. :$)

One without it.

Re: Iron man Helmet, New to this, NEED HELP!

Neodymium or rare earth Magnets, you can either hot glue them in or place them in halfway through laying your material in the molding process.
Nice looking helmet BTW fin

Thanks Jay, wasn't going to post it but it was the easiest way to show what I'm talking about. :)

Re: Iron man Helmet, New to this, NEED HELP!

Thanks for the tip finhead!

So i just started resining, and i used fiberglass resin JELLY. Not a good idea i think.. its almost like bondo and its really weighing down the paper but i guess lesson learned. On the plus side it takes like 15 mins for it to dry, i almost have all the helmet resined, but i might go get normal fiberglass resin for the actually fiberglassing, i dont see how the jelly with the cloth will work

It wont, that's not what it's designed for.

Re: Iron man Helmet, New to this, NEED HELP!

the least you can do with jelly is strengthen the interior but thats about it.

some people have used it including myself for the inside after using the resin on the outside

but I dont recommend it. Better alternatives out there.

Re: Iron man Helmet, New to this, NEED HELP!

well since i have like the whole outside of hte helmet covered in the jelly, what should i do now? Will there be a bad effect since i used that instead of regular resin? i still plan to go buy the normal resin stuff to use with the cloth, but hopefully the coating of hte jelly wont mess up my helmet.

No it should be fine. What I meant is it's not designed to be used with matt/cloth. It's too thick to work properly, it wont saturate well enogh.

Re: Iron man Helmet, New to this, NEED HELP!

so i just fiberglassed the OUTSIDE of my helmet, and then rememebered i was suppose to do the INSIDE... :[ is this going to mess up my helmet?

Re: Iron man Helmet, New to this, NEED HELP!

you're using fiberglass wool though bud, where do you get that stuff again? :)

Re: Iron man Helmet, New to this, NEED HELP!

does this mean i still need to fiber glass te inside? because im almost out of that hardener stuff. the bottle was like 20x bigger than the hardener, but i guess im putting to much hardener into it lol im such a newbie

Nope should be fine don't have to glass the inside it might make your final helmet a bit larger though, not much but a bit.
Yeah for mixing resin it's approx 2%-3% hardener.

Re: Iron man Helmet, New to this, NEED HELP!

lol yeah i definately did probably 10% per mix >.>.. and bigger is good, it was a bit snug to begin with :D
