Iron Man 3 (Post-release)

If you choose to go see Iron Man Three there’s three things you should try to remember:
(1) Its written and directed by Shane Black, who wrote a lot of eighties action films including, most notably , Lethal Weapon 1 and particularly 2 (stilt house destruction/cargo ship ending)
(2) It’s a comic book film that plays exactly to that theme.
(3) Robert Downey Junior IS Iron man.
If you go in to see it in that frame of mind you’ll really enjoy it. Personally I felt I jumped back at least two decades and had a bloody good time laughing with and at it. It’s a tongue-firmly- in -cheek movie that plays against its self a lot of the time, with some great set ups , snappy one liners that play directly to RDJs strengths and Tony Starks character , and action pieces that for a third film of its kind gave it a fresher feel than I was expecting to find, particularly after Iron Man 2, that frankly plodded its way to the end.
It gets a solid B+ from me. It was daft and utterly ridiculous at times ,particularly the antagonists (fans of spontaneous human combustion may buy the theory, I found my willing suspension of disbelieve had to be locked in a room with barred windows to stop it running screaming from the building), but then I remembered point (2).
The effects are superb, the cast wear the film as if its an old familiar suit of armor and if you’ve managed not read any spoilers you may be pleasantly surprised by what happens in the story. I can see some of the real fans of Iron Man may end up slightly outraged by the end, and it certainly felt like a unexpectedly completed story arc to the trilogy to me (depending on how many millions RDJ might get to return I guess) . Certainly the end of credit scene doesn’t really hint where its going anyway.
Two things that made me laugh, but for the wrong reasons;
Product placement: IT unbelievably saturates the film in places. In one twenty second scene they must have nearly paid for it in sponsorship deals.
And ,ultimately ,too many cooks spoil the broth. Replace “cooks” with “suits” and you'll get the idea. Less Iron man and more Tin men.And go see the film in 2D not 3D. There was just so much going on at times my eyes simply couldn’t keep up with it. You’ll understand by the end of it. However, the 3D did work really well for the Air Force One scene.
So ,in summary, great ,fun film, loads of action and laughs, miles better than the second one, what’s not to like!

Definitely a fun film. The end credits seal this as the end of the trilogy. I hope RDJ returns, he owns the character without question.
I'm not a massive IronMan comics fan, but I read up on the Mandarin prior to viewing the film. I can see how that's gonna annoy a whole heap of people, but for me, Trevor was portrayed so comically by Ben Kingsley that you can't help but love the twist.

I agree with the 3D thing too, I think it would more enjoyable to watch in a crisp HD 2D format, the 3D was dark and didnt bring much.
And after talking with some buddies earlier, we realize we never get to see some real Iron Patriot fight scenes, never even saw the shoulder cannon shooting something. Nor did we see much of Tony's multiple new suits, and now we won't be seeing them anymore ...

I thought it was good, but the twist I thought was pretty dumb. Why waste such a great character from the comics and turn him into that.

Really?! Each to there own but I thought it was extremely clever and unexpected. I love it when watching a film I feel like a wall just hit me. Perhaps its 'wasted' cos its kinda hard to make up a feasable way for a man in a giant green outfit with magic rings whos a human to be realistic. Sure in THOR or whatever where they dont have our laws of physics but this is the new age. People want realistic (to an extent. I get combustion in humans isnt that realistic but its feasably explained to a point) characters.
Were not in the 80s anymore. That stuff to come out now I dont think would survive in todays world if it wasnt already there.
Reminds me of Final Fantasy 7 rpg game. I play it once a year and love it. But if I never played it when I was younger. Id think. Whats this crap! Lol

I like that things change. Or else id know the story.
Honestly I was so worried I was gonna hate the Mandarin. How could he not be magic and be hard as nails and a decent opponent? Tony would easily just blow him away. At least they kept his look.
Im not sure how I feel about losing the arc reactor. But see it as necessary story plot related. He doesnt need it as powers built into the suit now. So why have it.
Suppose I cant expect everyone to be a fan. It was a HUGE risk for them to do what they did.

Well, just back from the theatre, I still have to process it, but I think it was good, yet not as good as I hoped. And I really thought this was the last Iron man movie, if it weren't for the "tony stark will be back" at the end.
Mandarin plot twist was really not expected at all, quite fun actually, although I too wish to see a real Mandarin one day.
Something kept bothering me all the way home : the soundtrack wasn't right, were did AC/DC go ?!

No AC/DC dont know if i can go now.

I like to be spoiled. Even though I know the twist...Im still looking forward to seeing it. For those of you that don't want to know, well this is a spoliery thread. So...
The Mandarin (played by Ben Kingsley) is revealed in the film to be merely a drunken British actor named Trevor Cassidy who was hired by Killian to be the face of The Ten Rings while Killian actually ran the operation.

That's a major bummer for hard core comic fans, and I have to admit I am peeved that one of Stark's greatest foes in the comics is reduced to this.

I cant see how they would have made him good to be honest. Its a shame you know before watching. The suprise kinda softened the blow lol

Man, you're really trying to win us over with the twist, but it's taking a really badass villain and pretty much making him a drunken idiot puppet. That's where the problem is, not how would they make him good. For example look at electro in the new spider man movie. They completely changed how he looks from the comics but still are making him, him.

It would be like taking Bane, an awesome badass villain and making him a puppet of Talia Al Ghul in Dark Knight Rising.....oh wait nevermind ;)

I thought bane was excellent. Lol. I know where youre comin from believe me. I just dont want people to make their minds up too soon. Theres always gonna be dissapointment as hes not how he was. I just hope it doesnt ruin an otherwise good movie for the fans. And as for electro. Well I disliked the new spiderman movie sooooo ill see haha.

I just came back from the theater " WHAT A PIECE OF CRAP THIS MOVIE IS" !

The plot of this movie doesn`t even make sense. There is no purpose on making this story other than disney making $$$$$$$:devil

Why the took an actor like Ben Kingsley and made him more ridiculous than jar jar binks.

Also this movie has the mouse touch, it looks like a disney movie it feels like a disney movie, omg why disney bought marvel.

If this is the start of phase 2 i don`t know what to expect, even though i hope thor 2 will be more decent.

Again. Each to there own. But just calling it crap and spouting off isnt going to get many people taking notice. And saying things like it makes no sense makes it sound like you didnt understand .. whats so difficult about the plot? Idealist genius gets made fun of when he has a good idea. Spends years developing to become super soldier. Comes back with a plan for world domination by revenge. This is what I hate when someone didnt like it fair enough but makes no sense when saying why. You are aware that this is marvels baby? Yet the comments appear as though you think because disney bought marvel. They now take over what actually happens?
If you dont like it fair enough but saying there was no need for the movie makes little to no sense.

I saw it last night and I thought it was a solid Iron Man movie. I would of liked to of seen more of Tony Stark actually in the armor but I can see why they did it the way they did. Parts of the end sequence kinda reminded me of The A-Team ship yard sequence in terms of "I've seen this kinda thing before". So while the action was fun it was by no means original.

Also the experience was ruined for me as the theater had the volume levels messed up, music way to high and speech way too low. I'll be going to check it out again in IMAX for a better viewing.

The after credits sequence was OK at best, I actually thought the cameo character looked like he's aged a lot since the avengers and also put on a few pounds. Seeing the Thor trailer on the big screen was pretty cool too.

Overall B+ I'll buy it on Bluray.

I cannot get over how much of Lethal Weapon 2 is reworked into Iron Man 3. But then again they are both so much Shane Blacks films. Which is probably why I laughed at them so much. Watched LW2 last night just to make sure. And yes, there was a stilt house destroyed,a helicopter gunships attack, the hero nearly drowns, but instead of dislocating his arm,in IM3 it detaches to give him a lift up.Then there is that whole super shoot out ending in the cargo shipyard. And, of course , the whole Stark/Rhodes relationship is strengthened and given the Riggs/ Murtaugh comedy treatment. Watch it if you get the chance. It really surprises me just how much a director such as Black can alter the entire way a film plays, but thats what they are paid to do.
And I think that's why I enjoyed it so much. They played it for laughs (and lets face it,a greater part of the success of the Avengers was its broader appeal to everyone ,not just the Marvel fans). I thought the faults with the 42 played well exactly because it was a prototype and was thus prone to a lot of problems . I felt a lot of the "WHOA" moments worked because they were so unexpected. It was a comic book film in every way you wanted to believe it to be and luckily Black establishes that very early on and that mood carries the film all the way through, at least it did so for me. I liked the tiny cameo with Yinsen at the very beginning, the whole "panic attacks" thing with Stark, the Mandarin "twist" made me laugh out loud so suddenly people looked at me. The "Extremis" experiment is still a step too far for me because of what it introduces into the Marvel universe now, I mean how do you ignore something like that exists in the next films, particularly after Stark solves the problem caused by it in the end ( though I must admit the newly sculptured Pepper Potts was very appealing, it must have cost Gwen a lot of time in the gym). And the "clean slate" protocol meant nothing on reflection, I mean there's still War Machine rocks, sorry ,Iron Patriot flying around and Jarvis's was still intact. I was also unexpected moved by the bit with the robots trying to save each other and Tony going back for them.
So,having slept on it last night and I still woke up to feel I liked it a whole lot more than I had thought I would. Just go expecting to HAVE fun and it will be fun.
PS Nitrox, I actually struggled to recognize the actor in the after credits until he spoke. Amazing what a hair cut and a few too many Shawarma makes

I really enjoyed the film, it was a lot stronger than Iron Man 2. Though I didn't come out of it without a few issues here or there.
Music was an issue for me, Cause come one, we all want to hears some AC/DC.
Too many suits, whilst an interesting idea, the amount became too much and it would up being less Iron Man more Jarvis. And so many of the end moments that were apparently a threat to him could have been resolved by using said suits, it kinda made Tony a moron for a few minutes.
Rhodey was an improvement in this one, Cheadle I wasn't much of a fan of in IM2, but they found a decent balance with him.
Pepper... exists, that's about as deep as that character ever gets for my money, and she was fine, Was nice seeing Happy get a bit more of a role
The mandarin twist was fun, I kinda hoped we would have had another twist on that after... but who knows
Guy Pearce was great, his flashback geek was not his best work... but the rest of the film he was a solid villain

Plot wise, I felt it worked, was a little long in places, and it's a hard sell pitting a guy in suits against biological warriors, but it was a fun idea.
I have to say I wasn't the biggest fan of some of the editing, some of the transitions were a little too stylized and out of places, and at some point it did feel like the film was gonna flip into full on comedy mode

That said I'd put it pretty high on my list of Marvel films, Not as Good as IM1 or Avengers, but up there.

I for one would like to see another solo outing with these characters

Well... I went to cinema last night, saw iron man 3. And I must say iron man 2 is better than this film.
The movie has some amazing ideas and plot points, but it's executed in such a poor, childish way. 1st act is amazing, the 2nd is ok, although this is where the immature part of the movie is the most obvious. 3rd act is a horrible mess and frankly I couldn't believe the half of stuff that was happening.
All in all, for me, the movie is a huge disappointment.

Well my friend that`s your point of view and i respect that, but im not a 10 year old boy im 35. That movie felt fake after his house blows up.

I know shane black, this movie doesn`t feel like anything he has made in the past (predator, monstersquad, lethal weapon, the last boyscout etc)

And let me tell ya my friend Ironman I was a very cool movie.

Saw the movie a few hours ago and I absolutely loved it.

Interesting how they integrated Maya's character into this story, as she betrays Tony's trust in the comic as well though much differently. Guy Pearce was a pretty decent villain as Killian, better then the one-page sap from the comic, that's for sure. Sir Ben Kingsley was ****ing hilarious! I freakin' loved him in this movie! At first I thought as a terrorist he was pretty generic, that they were making him too much into a Bin Ladin character (seeing him in the video clips greeted by children, showing him test-firing an automatic rifle, etc), then we see him in boxers prancing around the bedroom with a British accent! OMG I cracked up! It made the role make a lot more sense in this movie, though I agree having the real Mandarin as a villain would be pretty cool. Not sure they'll ever go that route now.

:thumbsup
