Interest Iron Giant 6" 3D Printed Kit

Hey everyone!

I've been working on a 3d printed model of the Iron Giant and wanted to see if anyone else would be interested in getting their hands on a kit of their own. I haven't priced anything out yet as the price for each would depend on options and printing materials but the range could be anywhere between $50 and $100 for the raw kit. Since the only figures of the character out there I've seen are super expensive or shoddily executed, this could be a good opportunity for fans of the show to get in on the action at a reasonable price that includes a range of options and allows personal flair.

I've posted some Solidworks renders of the model below (more to come along with detailed vector drawings) and have just finished modeling all of the features. I just finished putting the parts together into an assembly so I can pose him for more example images showing the articulation. This design has 24 points of articulation total, including the jaw, head, neck, shoulders, mid-arm cuts, elbows, wrists, hand bend, mid section, abdomen, hips, upper legs, knees, feet and the pistons behind each foot. Most of the joints are hinges that pop into place while a few are ball joints - namely the mid section, hips and the two knees.

Since articulation in the fingers isn't an option at the 6" scale, I created five variations of both hands (Figma style) for ten total: relaxed, flat, fist, pointing and for the jokers out there, giving the finger! In addition, there are three versions of the eyes (standard, sad/sleepy/happy, and battle mode) and two versions of the head and jaw - one of each as the standard variant and a second of each showing teeth so you can make him smile, or to match with his battle mode eyes and an alternate version of the left forearm for his laser cannon for berzerker mode!

Other notable features include the jaw which can not only pivot but moves up and down in a slot on the sides of the head, the pistons on the back of each foot which hinge on the foot and have a ring to feed into on the inside of the back of each leg so they appear functional, and of course, the alternate laser cannon left forearm. which includes all details around the 'spinner', circular cuts in the front barrel and wires on bottom.

The next step is to prepare the parts for print to try to get the best price possible and I'll report back here with my findings.

Essentially, I'll be gauging the interest here and pricing the figure accordingly so that I make enough to print one for myself. I may also offer completed, painted versions for a bit extra but that remains to be seen.

Here is the complete model with his standard head, jaw and eyes. Relaxed variation of the hands are shown as well.

And here are some of the alternate parts - first image shows the sad/sleepy/happy eyes along with the head and jaw showing teeth, second image shows the battle mode eyes along with teeth on the head and jaw, and the third image shows from the shoulder down on the laser cannon - in actuality, only the forearm section will be replaced, not the entire arm.

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts as well as who may be interested in a run. It won't be a standard run - I'll be making the parts available in my Shapeways shop for you to grab whenever you want so there's no firm commitment - I'm just gauging interest so I know how to price it. The more interest I get, the less I can sell it for!

I'm interested, especially in the way you're thinking about doing it by just offering it up in the Shapeways shop...that way I can purchase it whenever I want.

It's a great looking model so far.

Awesome to see the interest so far! Out of curiosity, for those interested, what options are most appealing to you?

For example, is having multiple hand options more appealing than variations on the head/jaw or eyes?

Is the addition of the laser cannon on the left arm as an option more appealing than one for the right arm gun? I haven't modeled that one yet and wasn't necessarily planning on it but if there's interest for more options vs less, I'd love to make this as versatile as possible to engage more people!

I just finished drawing up a PDF showing the location of all joints and options for interchangeable parts - I've included an image below but you can view that PDF here for better quality:

I'll let a bit more interest generate before making any additions or changes, but will be preparing the parts for print in the meantime to get an idea of a price point.

I will buy the crap out of this!!

Maybe make his "superman" chest piece available?

...now where did I put that "Shut up and take my money" picture?

Awesome! Thanks for the feedback, I can definitely make the "S" chest piece accessory - just not sure of the best way to implement it yet. I've pretty much been going by the Mondo 16" version of the figure as a reference for what should be included as an option (although I think for the price tag of that one, they should have included a LOT more!) and they used a magnet which is a good method but it's not something that can be built into the 3d printed parts and pretty much any mechanical solution will change the appearance of the chest so other options would be an extension on the back of the "S" that hooks onto his 'collar' or just a flush indentation on the back of the "S" to match his chest and it can be glued on if desired.

And one more image for the night, an exploded view of all parts on the 'standard' version. 27 parts total. There are currently 13 additional parts for the other options for a potential total of 40 parts. I'll be adding a few accessories and other part variants as well but first I want to get a price point on the regular model. Since the eyes will be printed in a translucent material, I've decided to put all three into the same file since it's more cost effective to print all three in one file as opposed to separately. The hands will be printed on their own as well with the option to print them in the higher detailed material or the standard plastic for the rest of the parts.

EDIT: I didn't notice when I mirrored the left side parts that they didn't actually mirror in orientation but just in position haha. Looks kind of funny with two right feet and a backwards hand...but the actual parts do indeed look right, I just built the exploded view with assembly features that didn't work the way I expected them to!

I can only speak for myself, but I'm most interested in the standard head with sets of relaxed, fist, and pointing hands along with the "S" chest symbol.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. I'm determining how to group the parts for order on Shapeways and knowing what people would prefer to get 'together' will help me put the right sets together to possibly sprue to cut back on part labor costs. I'll likely put all of the hands and eyes into their own groups since that's the most economical way for any of the materials but I may opt to put the laser cannon together with the alternate head/jaw since they go together and then put the rest of the options both on their own and in one group containing all of them. As of now, the only additional option to the alternate hands, eyes, head and laser cannon is the "S" but I will likely add more - probably pieces of debris for him to 'munch on' like a car, steel beam, etc. We'll call it a ;scrap extras bundle' haha.

Already, just the base set of parts contains too many polygons for a single file upload so I'll probably split it into body/head, arms and legs respectively then add the additional sets based on feedback.

Model looks great! I would be interested in this as well. Not 100% sure which variations yet but overall a great project I would definitely support.

More interest, awesome! Any thoughts on the possibility of scaling up the model for a larger figure, perhaps an 8 or 10" version? 6" is a good size for getting the best price but some people may be willing to spend more for a larger figure. It wouldn't change the model itself or the articulation, that's already pretty good, but it would increase the level of detail on smaller features like rivets, the eyes, etc. Honestly, everything should show up well on the 6" version but I thought I'd ask.

And thinking more on the groups of parts, I think I've settled on these:

1) Head, jaw, torso, abdomen & hips
2) Shoulders, upper arms 1, upper arms 2, forearms
3) upper legs, lower legs, feet, pistons
4) All three sets of eyes
5) All hand options
6) Laser Cannon parts plus alternate head and jaw with teeth
7) "Junk Yard" set including the "S" symbol and misc other junk accessories like a car, steel frame, etc.

So if you wanted the complete package, there would be seven total files to grab, five to grab for the basic model with additional hands and eyes. The only reason the eyes are separate is to print them in a clear material which would look best for the resolution and paint job application.

I second this. Larger options are always nice
