Hey everyone!
I've been working on a 3d printed model of the Iron Giant and wanted to see if anyone else would be interested in getting their hands on a kit of their own. I haven't priced anything out yet as the price for each would depend on options and printing materials but the range could be anywhere between $50 and $100 for the raw kit. Since the only figures of the character out there I've seen are super expensive or shoddily executed, this could be a good opportunity for fans of the show to get in on the action at a reasonable price that includes a range of options and allows personal flair.
I've posted some Solidworks renders of the model below (more to come along with detailed vector drawings) and have just finished modeling all of the features. I just finished putting the parts together into an assembly so I can pose him for more example images showing the articulation. This design has 24 points of articulation total, including the jaw, head, neck, shoulders, mid-arm cuts, elbows, wrists, hand bend, mid section, abdomen, hips, upper legs, knees, feet and the pistons behind each foot. Most of the joints are hinges that pop into place while a few are ball joints - namely the mid section, hips and the two knees.
Since articulation in the fingers isn't an option at the 6" scale, I created five variations of both hands (Figma style) for ten total: relaxed, flat, fist, pointing and for the jokers out there, giving the finger! In addition, there are three versions of the eyes (standard, sad/sleepy/happy, and battle mode) and two versions of the head and jaw - one of each as the standard variant and a second of each showing teeth so you can make him smile, or to match with his battle mode eyes and an alternate version of the left forearm for his laser cannon for berzerker mode!
Other notable features include the jaw which can not only pivot but moves up and down in a slot on the sides of the head, the pistons on the back of each foot which hinge on the foot and have a ring to feed into on the inside of the back of each leg so they appear functional, and of course, the alternate laser cannon left forearm. which includes all details around the 'spinner', circular cuts in the front barrel and wires on bottom.
The next step is to prepare the parts for print to try to get the best price possible and I'll report back here with my findings.
Essentially, I'll be gauging the interest here and pricing the figure accordingly so that I make enough to print one for myself. I may also offer completed, painted versions for a bit extra but that remains to be seen.
Here is the complete model with his standard head, jaw and eyes. Relaxed variation of the hands are shown as well.

And here are some of the alternate parts - first image shows the sad/sleepy/happy eyes along with the head and jaw showing teeth, second image shows the battle mode eyes along with teeth on the head and jaw, and the third image shows from the shoulder down on the laser cannon - in actuality, only the forearm section will be replaced, not the entire arm.

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts as well as who may be interested in a run. It won't be a standard run - I'll be making the parts available in my Shapeways shop for you to grab whenever you want so there's no firm commitment - I'm just gauging interest so I know how to price it. The more interest I get, the less I can sell it for!
