Info about Trek Movie Insignia?

I've got a Kirk & Co. era movie insignia on my jacket and I seem to remember reading somewhere about the origin of the design.

Something about the oval/rectangle background being the original design and then the delta shield being slapped on at the 11th hour to make it look more "Trek"?

Am I remembering this right? Who can fill in the holes in my swiss cheese memory?

I don't know about the modern history of it, but that rectangle logo is exactly like the emblem on an old gas stove from the 1950's. A friend had one in his apartment when we were in college. To make matters more nerdly, the brand of stove was "Enterprise". Wish I'd taken photos.
