Indiana Jones TLC: Holy Grail build from scratch

This is another little project I started just recently. The grail is completely made out of clay and sculpted by hand, I used screencaps from the film and some details for the size, from other builds I've found, as a reference.

I sculpted the bowl and stem/foot separately and attached them after they were somewhat finished.

I then let it slowly dry while still adjusting a few things here and there.

After it dried I started sanding the grail with sandpaper (60 grit) to smooth out the surface a bit and tweak the shape some more.

I'm pretty happy with the size and the overall appeal, but I will do some more minor adjustments before I begin with the paint!

Update:

Next step was painting the grail! The first layer of the mixed paint turned out too dark but luckily I was able to brush it over and achieve just the right tone of that red/brown clay color that was needed.

I also started with the gold leafing on the outside of the cup.

Update on the finished project!

Here's the grail with the finished leafing from both outside and inside!

To reach the weathered dust effect I painted over the outside of the cup, using an acrylic paint mix of light brown, white and light grey diluted with water. To get to that "cloudy" old look that's on the outside of the grail, I continually wiped the acrylic paint off with a towel and then let it dry for a few minutes to then add another few layers of paint until the right look was archieved.

Fantastic Job, I would love to make one out of clay, just to have the right feel when you pick it up.
