Independently moving tentacles?

First, I should introduce myself, as even though I've spent hours upon hours combing through the boards marvelling at the ingenuity on display. My name is Devilicia and I specialize in mostly horror/scifi themed burlesque, and I make most of my own costumes, props, FX, etc...its all very low budget DIY, but figuring out how to make this stuff work is half the fun (right....? she says after working 14 hours a day for the last 5 days on costumes and wipes what she thinks just may be brain blood from her eyes....):facepalm.
Anyways, I'm at a bit of a loss for a solution to this particular FX/costume element. I wasn't sure if my question should be here, or the Replica Movie costumes section, but as this is my own design and not a replica of anything, I thought I would start here.
I am making a Cthulhu costume for an act I'm doing in a couple of weeks. The headpiece/makeup (I tend to combine liquid latex with fabric and makeup) will be a bulbous cephlapod head (stretch fabric with an oblong balloon inserted) that comes down over the face and ends in dangling tentacles. What I would REALLY like to do is make the face tentacles so that at least a couple of them move independently (I can use fishing line to connect the others so they pick up some movement). The limitations are that I can't be plugged into anything (though I may be able to obscure battery packs under the wing harnesss) and I need to be able to move somewhat freely (though I WILL be moving slowly as part of the character). Most of the small motors I found are too bulky and/or would have to be placed at the front of the mask, which I don't think I could make work, at least with the short window of time I have to finish up the costume (which is also going to have wings, a wraparound tail,a self inflating belly and a scatter laser from...well....let's just say BEYOND).

I may be able to rig something to my fingers under the clawlike hands and under the liquid latex covered nylon I'll have on my arms, but I've just hit DIY'ers block on making this one work, so I thought I would put it out to suggestions. It's not a deal breaker on the costume, but it would just add that extra oomph I'm looking for ....and as it looks like I'll be performing this piece in front of Neil Gaiman, I want a whole lotta of Old Ones oomph.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
(and let me know if this is indeed the wrong forum for it....I figured since it falls into the realm of FX and a bit of sculpture, you all would be the best resource).

Since you're working on a tight budget, have you thought about possibly making the tentacles with bladders in them? You could have a ...squeeze ball (for lack of a better term) ,hehe, that forces air into them and takes them twitch and lift depending on how you shape them. Hope that gives you an idea. :)

I'm not sure it will help for your particular build, but there is an amazing tutorial on tentacle mechanics on the Stan Winston School site. Even if you can't implement their design, might give you some great ideas.

Best of luck!

Dependant upon how many tendrils / tentacles you have, perhaps a mechanism from one of those 'walking severed hand' halloween props mighht work?

Kinda like this one, just remove the 'wheels':

Would be very effective if the tentacles were rubbery, as it would add more 'wibble' (technical term ;) ). Maybe link a couple of tentacles to each 'finger' mechanism with fishing line for more a more squamous appearance.

A chin piece with a few extra tentacles as a beard (I guess!) would move with the jaw for more vertical movement. :)

Hope that helps!

Oh! I hadn't thought of one of those! I have at least two of them laying around somewhere I can play with.

As for The Schlitzie's suggestion, I was starting to think along those lines; as in making a sort of "harmonica" out of those NYEve blowout favors (but disabling the noisemaker part, because, well, that sound would make it an entirely *different* sort of act). If I can't rig the crawling hand mechanics properly in enough time, I'll probably be headed down this route.

That Stan Winston site...I'm almost afraid of the rabbit hole that will drop me down; in 5 weeks my friends will find me half mad from scurvy, under a giant pile of gears and calipers with a glazed smile on my face and half finished tentacles

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

In this video they briefly discuss something similar to what I believe you're asking for, but because it isn't the main point of the video they don't go into detail. I haven't watched the video in a while but from memory they cut to a scene and it is actually these freely moving tentacles that I believe were supposed to represent dredlocks or something on this hellhound or maybe alien dog. I think they used drier springs and uncoiled them and added a mechanism to them so they'd move the way they did. Your best bet is watching the video.

What about cable control? Your description of what you are planning seems to be busy enough, so this couldn't possibly be too much! Using fishing line, you can have the cables run to any part of you costume, ending with plastic rings. Just hook fingers into rings and pull! Pull the left cable, the tentacle goes left. Pull right, it goes right. Pull both, it "S"'s. Hopefully, the sketch helps:)
