In desperate need of some help with metallic red paint for an Iron Man build

I've mostly finished up my build; everything is Plastidipped and ready to be primed, however, I don't have any red metallic paint.

I know lots of people use some DupliColor red that I can find at Autozone. That said, when I first tried to prime my costume, the stench of the DupliColor paint was outrageously awful. I primed in my garage, and just walking into the house stunk it up so much I had to have all the windows open all day. I also probably can't use DupliColor because the smell is probably so strong it violates my HOA's policies.

I've seen Krylon X-Metals Red online, but I can't find it anywhere locally (Salt Lake City).

Right now the only over the counter options I know of near me are:
  • Do a silver base coat and try to paint the red over that. I have a feeling the red will overpower the silver.
  • Do a coat of red and then use Valspar's clear glitter spray paint over it. I'm quite concerned this will look, well, like a 12 year old girl decorated it.
  • Have Lowes mix a can of red latex paint with Valspar's paint crystals (Valspar Paint Crystals). This would involve applying the paint to my costume with a brush, which concerns me because quite frankly I suck at painting.

Any words of advice or experience to share? Am I just screwed or should I attempt one of the options above?

I've used Duplicolor paints many times and I've never had a problem with "stench"... Don't paint in an enclosed area like your garage, and wear a respirator. Leave the wet pieces to dry outside before bringing them in. You shouldn't have a problem

Kind of unrelated, but do you know of any really big parties up in SLC? I'm in Provo, looking for places to go!

Do you have anywhere OUTDOORS you can paint? Kevin is correct, you don't want to paint anywhere enclosed that doesnt have excellent ventilation. I would recommend going outside, to the driveway, the backyard, anywhere that won't hold the fumes in place. You can make yourself breathing in those fumes.

Not really into the party scene; sorry. I can certainly attest that Provo isn't the place to find them though :p

For what it's worth, I always use a respirator whenever I'm using any kind of aerosol like that, so when I was using the product it's not like I was standing there breathing it in.

Unfortunately I can't spray that outside since it violates the rules of the HOA I'm at.

Maybe I'll ask some friends if they mind if I use their back yard to do some of the work.

Thanks for the replies; I think the constraints of my work area are the real issue here.

Hiya, not sure if this helps as I am in the UK but I bought Solar Gold and Regency Red (Ford branded) sprays off Amazon. I assume you can get a similar or possibly exactly the same. Hope that helps.
