I'm looking for a movie - young guy and energy blade weapon

Hi all, I hope it's fine to ask this, it's not about a prop, but a movie. I don't know the name of it, I can only describe it. It's an animated movie, possibly released somewhere through the 1980s and 1990s. It's about a young man, looking for a particular sword. He wields a weapon similar to a light sabre: a hilt that generates a blade made of energy. Please, if you know what I'm talking about, tell me the name of the movie.

Sounds like Thundarr to me, as well. But it was a TV series, not just a movie. It's also just been made available on DVD! You have to order it online, because the discs are produced on demand, but you CAN obtain the series now! :cool

If it is possible that it is an anime it could be Tenchi Muyo. There have been a number of TV series and movies based off the show starting in the early to mid 90's. The sword is called the Tenchi-Ken and is on my personal list of future props to build.
