I finished my Raider, AGAIN!

So, I did more research & found that my Cylon Raider model was inaccurate- so out came the tools & paint!
I removed the cockpit cover & filed it down to lower & streamline it by 2 mm, and brought the connecting housing down a mm, then I replaced the 'nose' with a scratch built new one, then re-painted the worked areas, and lastly, added in the dark panel lines. Research took longer than model work!:lol:lol

Any Classic BSG fans here?

Superb! Love the panel lines, very neat!
They make a WORLD of difference, eh? I did a test etching them in, but the line came out too wide. The etching worked fine on my Viper
Galacticalandingbay025.jpg

but it's a different scale (the Raider is almost 2X bigger IRL) and the lines needed to be finer. Photos of the actual model are inconclusive as to whether they were drawn on or etched

but if they were etched, it was very fine, then the lines were coloured.

I used a permanent ultra-fine black Sharpie.:love
Thanks for the feedback, everyone!

Classic BSG fan here. And I love the reworked look of the raider.

Very nice viper too.

Ted.

Thanks a lot, Ted! My Son & I watch Classic BSG on a (severely) regular basis. Every time I see the Vipers, Raiders, Shuttle or Galactica herself, I freak out! It's like.... spaceship porn.:lol

Nice work on the update! I'm gonna build mine that way, to look more like the studio model.

Funny, but the studio model got washed out during the optical process making it seem lighter in colour in the miniature shots- same with the Vipers & the Galactica. So we can make the studio versions, OR the onscreen versions- it's all good! My next Viper will be the onscreen nearly white one with no visible pilot.
I *must* make all versions... it's my obsession.:lol

The classic Viper is my favorite space fighter from any show. Love it!
Me TOO!! I totally loved the X-Wing (and still do), but when I saw the Viper, I was like WHOAAAHHHDUDE!!!! EXCELLENT!!!
Hence my obsession with the models.
Were I rich, I'd commission a full-scale mock up.
But where would I park it?

IN MY FRACKING LIVING ROOM!!!:lol

I'd be willing to bet they were drawn on. Universal is known for doing everything "on the cheap", and a drafting pencil and a straightedge are far less expensive than scribing tools. :rolleyes

Nice work on both builds!

I looked at photos of the Galactica from before it was restored & a bunch of lines, particularly on the landing bay pods were DRAWN ON IN PENCIL!!!:lol I couldn't believe it!
Whatever looks good on camera, I guess!:cool

Wow, what a difference those panel lines make.
I need to experiment with a fine tip sharpie. The thought of ME trying to scribe panel lines makes me nervous,

If you're using a scribe tool, or even a broken-tipped Xacto knife (like I have), the secret is to go lightly a few times to establish the path BEFORE going deep. I find 5 to 8 strokes work for me.
An ulra fine tip sharpie works well though, but give it a few hours to dry on flat paint. I have no idea how it works on gloss, but you don't want to use gloss paint on most spaceship models anyway, I conjure.

Chrisisall, those panel lines make the model. I have 3 BSG models on the shelf waiting for me to get to them. I will be using your panel line process for each of them. The lines pop and add so much to the overall look. Great job on both models.

Yeah, they did the same thing with the panel lines on the Star Destroyer models (at least) in the original Star Wars trilogy. As you wrote, if it looks good on camera, it's good enough.
