How to get rust off old Buck ROgers Ray Gun ??

Friend gave me her Buck ROgers metal ray gun -- it has tarnish and a bit of discoloring and/ore rust marks on it -- anyone have any good advice on how to restore the metal??

what sort of finish does it have?

I got an XZ-38, copper plated, which had been PAINTED gold on top of that to hide the rust... but by gentle application of metal polish, I got her fixed up to a fine degree. :cool
