How to burn up an entire weekend, go build a Dalek

I think your Dalek is looking fine. :D

The only observation I have, and it's probably not fixable at this time, is that the shoulders on yours have kind of an acute slope on them... on the real Dalek, note how the profile up from the skirt kind of blends into the shoulders, but on yours it kind of breaks inward... yours has kind of a "zigzag" look, where the real one is kind of "conical"...

dalek_axis.jpg

If you look at the central axis of the Dalek, this means that the real one has a sort of tank-like visual stability from all angles...as it moves, it seems perfectly upright and straight.

Also watch the angle on the front of your "gun arm blocks", which is angled on the real one and vertical on yours.

side shot or profile, as requested, based on the availble pics and no plans available for the NSD i used myself as a guide, i used myself to help gauge height and width etc....my aim was to make sure an operator could operate it, [attachmentid=9726]i mean come on you didnt think i was going to build this and not be able to get in it...=-)<div class='quotetop'>(Reverend Scapegoat @ Aug 21 2006, 11:31 AM) </div>
That's looking very sweet indeed. Any chance of a profile pic at all? I can't work out how the "shoulders" actually look in real life...

also i need ot add to my wish list, endless money , a machine shop and tons of Dalek elfs to help with the build and more time , and more money , did i mention money already......=-)

Heh. That back panel was the exact reason I was after a profile shot - It looks to me like the Dalek's leaning forward in the shots in Post #38.

I hate posting constructive criticism on any forum - I always get worried that it'll be taken the wrong way... Since it's gotta be a bugger to have put so much work into something, only to have some git on teh intarwebz point out all your mistakes.
:S

Well here is the latest round of pics on the build, needless to say it was a hot humid freakin' weekend , not one to be outside all day, the progress was slow and that was my last weekend, now got to try and finish after work ever night., i have to still get all the electronics installed and attach all 56 hemispheres to the body and touch up the paintwork, fingers crossed.

oooh lookin' good. EXTERMIN-ATE.

I am totally jealous, as I just spent a rediculous amount of money to ship several Dalek and Doctor Who toys over from England (including that lovely gold 12" model). My CATS are now the enemy of the Daleks...

How brilliant would that thing be wandering down the street. :)

Good job- and keep up the photos.

thanks for the kind words, heres the finished item, i have to say it turned out better than i hoped, its not 100% screen accurate, but good enough to get the point across, maybe i should learn a lesson here, and start building it with enough time to do all the little details, i have spent a total of 5 weekends building this on my own with no help, and only some small power tools, so i am happy even though i know the purists will tell me all the little mistakes i made, i am happy to take it, but i will exterminate you if i dont like it...=-) <div class='quotetop'>(kimncris @ Aug 29 2006, 11:09 PM) </div>

I think it looks marvelous. And very impressive in person I'll bet.

Certainly better than I could have done in five weekends with my paltry skills. :sleep

Have you shown it publicly yet? What was the response?

Very cool. Did you install something to do the voice changing trick?

Now all we need is a scared crowd. :lol

That I was, Reverend.
Last outing with my Death Dalek was the Space Centre

Yeah, it turned out excellent in the end. What did you do about his back problems? Dalek chiropractor? ;)

The Daleks at the Space Centre got their own back bigtime.

Time to fess up - Who was it soaked the little kid... Then later on, once the poor wee bugger'd plucked up courage to go up to the big nasty Dalek a second time, soaked him AGAIN, before trundlesauntering away gloating "TWO - NIL. TWO - NIL."?

LOL
