thats a great story about the floor grate...LOL.. i had this vision of the daleks with the lights flashing and the dalek modulated voice going "" AAHHHHHHHH "" Well i thank you for the vote of confidence, i could only wish it was all finished, figuring out the angles from just printed photos was a real pian in the butt. And it was much more work to measure and cut and glue all this stuff together than i thought it would be. i had hoped with a long day and some hard work put in it would be done saturday night, not happening. but still i am glad to be where i am , and this far along, cutting those side panels was a bear ...., plus i uninstalled some stuff and made mods on the fly, the back panel was in the center so it hit your spine so i removed it and added two uprights either side. the seat was smaller but real uncomfortable, so added a larger area and then padded it, i kind of figured a couple of hours in it at halloween ,yep, its needing some padding. well the weekend is almost here and i can get back to work, the gun box and mid section are on the list. only time will tell. I will post new pics as soon as there is some change. thanks again guys.

Cool. When I read the subject line I was totally in awe of your skills, as I thought you'd built the whole thing over the course of ONE weekend :p but still, you've made an excellent start to what should be a great prop / costume :thumbsup

The picture above with the seat inside the dalek reminds me of an interview with one of the dalek 'actors' which I read a while back. He'd played the part of a dalek in one of the films where there were a whole load of daleks in Trafalgar Square (big square in London) and he had to pee, but it took too long for the actors to get out of their costumes to use the port-a-loo..... well, he spotted a drainage grate in the ground, and as the bottom of the dalek is open (no floor) he trundled over to the grating, and releived himself... hidden from view as he was still in the dalek of course.
Pretty soon, there was an orderly queue of daleks forming in a line to use this drainage grate. :lol

Keep us posted with updated pics. :)

Cheers,
John

You going to use electric motors to drive this dalek with?

From the hole int he bottom and the seat it looks like Flintstone's power to me :)

Great project, cool costume and will make a great full size display piece in the house. really cool all around :thumbsup

Now that's what we need to see more robots. That's looking GREAT if I may ask where did you get your dimentions from. I have a B9 and part of a R2 but always liked the Dalek and thought about going that way also. GREAT job again and keep us posted.

well good luck with the B9, thats no small undertaking.
sad to report i dont have any dimentions, just lots of reference pics, and lots of " that looks kinda of right"
I have some plans the BBC had printed in the Radio Times, its a mag that the BBC run, or a least they used to. but they are next to useless, dont get me wrong i started this project in reality this weekend, but i started this over a year ago in my dark empty head. i just could not figure out where to start figuring out all those angles. so just realy marked the ply wood and started cutting having some idea of where i wanted to be and kind of just went along with it. it looks close enough and as mine will never stand next to the real thing maybe all those littel quirks in size and shape wont matter, at leaset no to much i hope.

best guess is its approx 5'6" - 5'9" tall, probably 3 feet'ish wide and 4 feet long at the base of the skirt, maybe adding a few inched around the very bottom for the rubber bumber looking edge.
No plans for motors yet, i want to get it built first, its going to fred flintstone powered to start, that will at least give it life and movement, my bigger plans are lights in the eye stalk iris, flashing dome lights in time with modulated dalek voice box and some type of compressed air or CO2 fire extiguisher in the gun just to spook peaple. given time i hope to put a ring of blue or UV light around the base to simulate the "levitation " . last night i put a primer coat on the skirt and painted 22 of the small hemispheres that go around the skirt, its quite a project thats for sure. i will not be able to make serious prgress again untill the weekend gets here, i will keep you posted. thanks for all the support.

Well coming up to the end of week 2 and not much progress, work has been killing me this week so i am looking forward to weekend in the garage to really get stuck in, i will be posting some more pics at the weekend, here is where i am so far, dome is looking good, and my Dalek light ears arrived, thanks to a UK company, same ones used on the new series Dalek used by the BBC<div class='quotetop'>(SbsAgent @ Jul 20 2006, 10:02 AM) </div>

Ah, the 1973 plans? Yes, these are infamously, as you say, useless. Many people tried to make a Dalek from those plans, and they always come out wrong because of dimensions wrong, and general shape of things.

well i hate to say useless and be disrespectful of who ever made the palns, but i wasted an entire day cutting the stupid panels and none of them fit, so i just winged it from that point going with my gut on what looks right. my hope being unless i run in to real dalek and it starts laughing its ass of at my poor attempt to mimic him ...............( the term " HU-MILLL-LLIATE " seems to be what the dalek is saying )......... i think i am going to some what ok. <div class='quotetop'>(Zev @ Jul 27 2006, 11:22 AM) </div>

Hey speaking of Daleks I finally got ahold of one of the 12" radio controlled toy Daleks from Character Options... not a bad little model. Great if you don't have the space or money to house a full size Dalek. :D

sadley i feel your 12" radio controled version is better than mine. this is only my second weekend and its been a royal beo'tch ...., the collar was a pain and the neck didnt turn out right, so i am going to have to re do it all over again. only 2 more weeks left, will i ever get it finished. right now I wish I had just bought the 12 " one, i would be done already....LOL....<div class='quotetop'>(phase pistol @ Aug 8 2006, 11:06 PM) </div>

I think yours is looking fine. :D

When you rebuild the neck you might want to look at making it cylindrical... not tapered.

Also the bent tubes on the Arm Gun should be thicker.

But now I have the gray "Genesis of the Daleks" version too... pretty sweet.

The Daleks argue about which of them drank the last of the diet cola.

Differences are forgot when the Daleks sing a rousing chorus of the Dalek National Anthem. :)

I sold my Dalek a while back due to "space" issues in the house.
Always meant to start a new series beast.
The only part I have made so far is the gun, which a pal of mine machined for me out of brass and stainless steel.
Looks like it could do damage, especially if you clock someone around the ear with it - the weight is the only downside.

thats freakin cool, does it work......LOL......thats some nice work there.
well here are the latest pics, this is my third weekend and i have redone the neck section, its better but something is still off and i can not put my finger on it, well check out the new pics and let me know what you think.i have the base coat of paint on now, and i have been working on the weapons and doing the electronics for the iris, the iris turned out better than i could have hoped, tomorrow i hope to finish the neck, get it painted and add the mesh to line the inside, and maybe start on the skirt or start putting the hemispheres on the main body. only time will tell, but i fell better the neck is way better than the last attempt<div class='quotetop'>(Kernow @ Aug 14 2006, 08:24 AM) </div>

Here is the latest round of pics from yesterdays work, lots of sanding and painting this weekend, not much to show, did get the iris and electronics finished and painted, the light turned out pretty good, had a hard time getting the intensity and color to look right.only one more weekend to go ....

That's looking very sweet indeed. Any chance of a profile pic at all? I can't work out how the "shoulders" actually look in real life...

I think that's going to rock when you're finished.

I want to be Davros for DCon next year. I'd better get started soon.

The difference in the first run of Dr Who and the current run was simply money and time. The BBC gave the Who people the same time and money any other show had. Special effects and voices and literally everything else (with the exception of music) had to be done "on the fly" as the scenes were taped. This is much like soap operas are still done today. One chapter a week had to be turned out from rehearsal to the end of taping. So, I can easily forgive wobbily sets or whatever. The show for me was about the relationship between The Doctor and his companions, and the writing. It may have looked cheap, but the show had some excellent ideas and scripts over the last 43 years.

The new version, and I've only seen Season 1 of that, made me all giddy and weepy. Loved it and can't wait for the end of September when Sci-Fi breaks out the new epps.
