How to burn up an entire weekend, go build a Dalek

Well here goes, I am not really big on posting, but as i sit here sore, and picking the splinters out of my blistered hands i thought i would share my escapade from this weekend. Mostly because i just uploaded the pics from the camera and they turned out somewhat ok. I am a transplant Brit living in the USA now. I never liked Doctor Who as a kid, the sets wobbled and the bubble rap and carpet monsters never looked real. I preferred the world of star trek, the sets never wobbled and the monsters looked so much better. Plus i would have killed to own a Phaser. But low and behold years on Trek is off the air and Doctor Who is back. Thanks to some really good friends still living in England Who informed me that the entire country had gone stark raving mad for Doctor Who. I find my self completely and utterly impressed with the non-wobbly sets and top-notch special effects good characters and compelling story telling. Well i will get to the point, i decided to go build a Dalek, spent some money bought some materials, did some research, and bobs your uncle, sorry little Britishism slipped out i meant Hey presto... Much figuring out of angles, deliberating where to start cutting and drilling. Anyhow, here is where I am after weekend 1, the base, skirt what ever you want to call it is build and sanded ready for painting. So far i have the structure finished, some casters on it so it rolls around nice, it hollow and has a cushioned seat, open floor so you can move around Fred Flintstone style.
So take a look and let me know what you think, if your going to beat me down, wait at least 15 minutes for the Advil to kick in. See you next week same bat time same bat channel

I've never watched the show, so I don't know what it is either:

But whatever it is (robot?), your replica looks like it is coming along nicely. :thumbsup :thumbsup

EXTERMINATE. EXTERMINATE. EXXTERRRRMIIIIINATE........

Looking good :)

I always loved the Genesis of the Daleks style (must be an age thing from watching in the 1970s).

What style are you going to make any idea yet?

Cheers Chris.

Looks to be an excellent start. :thumbsup

Which version are you making? The 2005 TV series one (bronze)? Or one of the previous versions? There are about a hundred of them. :D

Also which plans are you using? There's some fantastic and very thorough reference available at the Dalek Forum, but you have to join to see it (it's free).

I haven't seen the show either and I don't know why.
Looks great so far. I just love to see people building things like this...

The Dalek machine is a sort of robotic transport... a metal shell that houses a living being. The Dalek glides around on the floor but has hover capabilities as well. The Dalek race is bent on destruction, and they are usually considered the scourge of the Universe.

The Daleks premiered in the second "episode" (or "serial") of Doctor Who which was broadcast in 1963. Their backstory has been changed of the vears, but their basic configuration has remained the same (except for coloration and various details such as length of the "ears", the stalks in front, and so on).

By the 1970s it was established that the Daleks were created by Davros, an evil hover-chair-bound scientist ("Genesis of the Daleks").

In the current TV series, the Daleks and the Doctor's race (the Time Lords of Gallifrey) had a huge Time War that annihilated both sides except for a single survivor of each race (see the first-season episode, "Dalek").

:) What a phenomenal project idea, hopefully you'll acquire less splinters over the rest of the building process.
The newest Who is brilliant and you'd probably love it, the last episode apparently that they saw over there was inspired I will say though I've been a Whovian since I was young so I grew up on the old rickety plunger/paint roller etc. daleks, Davros and the Cybermen made out of cardboard, leftovers and spray paint.

They also appeared in a couple of feature films. Aside from having a Tardis and some old guy called Dr Who and some Daleks the movies had pretty much nothing to do with the TV series.

Dr Who movies

OOOooooo.......very cool. It looks like you got a great start on it. can't wait to see the progress on this.

The character was just some old guy but the actor who played the Doctor in the movies was acting legend Peter Cushing OBE.

Cheers Chris.

Yeah, being here in the US my introduction to Dr. Who was the first film, with Peter Cushing. Then I saw some of the series with Tom Baker and really liked it but was very disappointed in the sets and creatures, after being an avid Star Trek fan, the production values on Dr. Who just didn't hold up. The premise was always terrific though..

I love the new series. I really like the look of the new cybermen too.

Good luck with your Dalek.

Well i want to start by saying thanks for all the kind words, and thanks to a lot of you who posted answers to some of the questions. I am indeed attempting to build a new series Dalek; I have some crude plans for a 1970's version, which donÂ’t help much. Basically i did a lot of looking at pictures and saying "" that looks like a "", this would give me idea on materials and then where to go buy said material, .....Savey.... So far I am out approx $200 in wood glue, liquid nails ECT.... I have enough to get the body made all the way up to the dome. I found some cool items in England; I have the lights to go on the dome and a voice modulator in the works that will flash the lights in time with the audio. Do you know how silly i feel sitting here posting this and admitting how excited I am about rolling that thing down the driveway and screaming " EXXXXXTERMINATE " at the kids as they go by..... LOL...holy crap I ma going through my second childhood, ohhh well on with the building. Confession time, I am 5'10" and a stocky 210lbs, so its a few inches taller wider and longer than its supposed to be, there is know way in hell I am building this thing at not being able to get in it. Well thatÂ’s entirely all together to much information. DidnÂ’t do any work last night I was just too tired, maybe tonight. So in a day or so some new pics. Thanks again

Cool. When I read the subject line I was totally in awe of your skills, as I thought you'd built the whole thing over the course of ONE weekend :p but still, you've made an excellent start to what should be a great prop / costume :thumbsup

The picture above with the seat inside the dalek reminds me of an interview with one of the dalek 'actors' which I read a while back. He'd played the part of a dalek in one of the films where there were a whole load of daleks in Trafalgar Square (big square in London) and he had to pee, but it took too long for the actors to get out of their costumes to use the port-a-loo..... well, he spotted a drainage grate in the ground, and as the bottom of the dalek is open (no floor) he trundled over to the grating, and releived himself... hidden from view as he was still in the dalek of course.
Pretty soon, there was an orderly queue of daleks forming in a line to use this drainage grate. :lol

Keep us posted with updated pics. :)

Cheers,
John

Hmm... Dalek as "loo"... not sure I'm comfortable with that. No sir. :unsure

Be sure to hose down the inside of any "screenused" props you might acquire. :lol
