How long does it take..... (answered)

...for a member to be banned? Here is the real scenario from a few days ago: I notice a first time poster post in the general prop section. Their first post is a generic "Hey guys I have this great shoe and clothing website come check it out!" www.blablablalinktocrap.com <---not the real website and yes I hit the 'alert' button.

I understand the usual path to banndom and some are a one strike you are out. But they dont end up in the 'List of Banned Members thread? This clown didnt. Is this because we are getting a large amount of obvious spam members and its not worth the time to list them in the Banned thread? <-----That is the real question.

Thanks,
Christian

Re: How long does it take.....

Christian,

When it comes to obvious spammers, we take a pretty harsh "zero-tolerance" policy and conveniently, the software supports this with the ability to delete a spammer's posts and ban the spammer in a single step.

To take a brief step back, we notify members of most bannings as a courtesy to the membership and to limit the amount of "what happened to member x" PMs and posts. We generally only do this when established members are banned... again, because those are the most likely for members in good standing to take notice of. However, with some sockpuppets and with spammers we often don't post a notice because those members are banned too quick to be missed.

In regard to how long it takes someone like a verifiable spammer to be banned... a lot of that depends on how long it takes members to notify us of a spammer. As I have mentioned previously, the staff does not "patrol" the board, looking for problems. The staff is composed of prop fans just like you, who love reading the board and interacting with other members. If they happen to run across someone breaking the rules during their typical browsing of the board, they react to it, much as we expect members to report a post to the staff when they run across someone breaking the rules during their typical browsing. We rely HEAVILY on members to report issues instead of actively seeking out troublemakers. Spammers are generally bannned as quickly as a member reports it to the staff.

Actually he did, along with all the other recent spammers... they have just all been put in the same post. As you mention in your final question, we have been getting so many lately, they didn't deserve their own individual post. :)

Since I haven't registered here in the past 7 years I don't know the answer to this. But does the board have a captcha? When I had phpBB2 I used to get 20-50 spammers a day. When I upgraded to phpBB3 it had a captcha and this reduced my spammers down to the single digits a month.

Yes, the software has a challenge/response included in the registration process.

I run a forum with phpBB3, but the captcha doesn't really work. Since its a local (Richmond, VA) it's easy to catch a spammer before they post. I wish I could make it so people from China couldn't join at all. :lol
