How do you make a fiberglass mold? Over a clay head?

I want to make a gel/fiberglass mold over a monster clay head because that's what everyone is telling me is best. But, I don't know how. What materials do I need to buy? And how do I do it ? I can only find videos making boat parts and I don't know if that is the same stuff or what? Thanks

It depends. If you're just looking to mold a face cast all you need is fiberglass resin, bondo or a gelcoat. If it's a full head cast you'll need to break it up into multiple sections so that you can remove everything once you've molded it. The first step is to lay down your gelcoat layer, or if you don't have gelcoat mix up some fiberglass resin and bondo to a milkshake consistency, and spread that all over your sculpt. Once that sets, you follow that up with your fiberglass, usually around 3 to 4 layers. That's the basics of it. Do you have a picture you can post of your sculpt?

Yes, as mentioned, a photo is ALWAYS helpful when describing what you are doing.
What do you want the finished product to be? What material, and how will it be used?
How many of these do you intend to make?
What is your budget? Fiberglass molds are a large investment if you only want 1 copy.

I can lead you in the right direction if you can answer the above. There are multiple steps involved, and they differ depending on your answers. (and photo)

It seems you have a few of these threads following your progress sequentially, instead of dividing up all your questions into separate threads, why not just combine all of them into one thread and keep progress on that? Just for cleanliness sake.

Check out Steve Neils youtube channel. He has multiple videos showing how he molds various items.

Sorry I don't have a camera for a picture right now, but all I am trying to do is make a one piece silicone mask of my own face carved to look older, and so I don't need multiple copies that's why I thought I would just use alginate over the monster clay and fill it with silicone and then everyone told me I cant do that if I want it to fit me, i thought plaster would be as expensive and as permanent as fiberglass just heavier so I thought I would do fiberglass but I don't know what material to use if I do use fiberglass I have no idea where to start.. Iwant the detail and its a fill head mask with a little bit more for a flap to cover the neck.

You have to make sure the gel coating (I'm assuming you're using something like silicone) wont deteriorate from components of the clay you used. Then you can procede to make a brush mold of the head. The next step would be to make you're mold jacket, which is composed of fiberglass. This should be made in 2 or more pieces around your silicone layers. If you have any process questions Smooth-On has videos on Youtube that can help you out.
