How do I stop tracking a topic.

Not a PM, but a topic. If you are tracking one, and click the "topic tracker" thing, you get an error msg.

When you click on "Message Tracker" (which is under "Archive Messages") you get an error message?

You should be able to:
-click "Message Tracker" (on the far left of your control panel)
-under "Read Messages" click on the boxes on the far right
-under the threads you're tracking, click "End tracking with"
