So how are these molds made? I couldn't find a lot of info on them. Are they a type of matrix mold? Are they backed up on the other sides with a jacket material (fiberglass, epoxy or plasti-plaste)?

It looks like MDF to me as well. I'm just trying to wrap my head around this concept as I've seen these photos before, but not familiar with the process.

It looks pretty easy to figure out. The particle board is acting as a rigid outer layer, with a rough shape of the sword cut out of it. The mold material was poured into the void between the sword and the particle board, probably one half at a time. Think your typical mold vessel made out of Legos, only in this case it looks like the mold material becomes part of the outer vessel. Clever way to do it, since it's a flat object. It probably wouldn't be practical or useful on a thicker object. If I had to guess, I would say that a solid layer of particle board is attached to the backside of each half.

How would you fill it with resin? No spout or vent.

Unfortunately the pic doesn't show the other half of the mold fully, but I would guess that the fill hole(s) is in that other half, somewhere in a flat spot that would be easy to sand off.

This is most likely a compression mold for foams and what not. Dump it in, brush it around, seal it up and let it expand.

I also saw that when I was searching for Skyrim props on Google. I just assumed they made a cavity in the board and then suspended the dagger over it somehow, then poured silicon up to the halfway point on the dagger. If that's not it, it has to be magic!
