Thanks. I still don't know what I'm doing. Some x-wing I see are so rough and weathered. Others look so controlled and thought out. And unfortunately the photos of red five are spotty at best. (Apparently it was destroyed)
Loving the look of the paint job, I'm now attacking my 1/72 finemolds x-wing, first time with an airbrush in anger etc and so far the pre shading is ok, nice work on the spatter, I've dug out my fine line pens and will practice the same :thumbsup

There's not a ton of airbrushing that needs to be done on these smaller star wars models. Mostly just for taped off panels. All the other weathering is with oils and pigments.
Interestingly, there was some spatter that appeared unintentionally. I believe it was from loose pigment that I was blowing away. Anyway, it kinda looked good
Thanks for the info hopefully this weekend I can start the masking and hoping I don't fubar it up. I'll certainly be using some of your pics as reference.
Be sure to spend a lot of time looking at the original ilm model. I often fall in to the trap of following someone else's build because I like it....forgetting to check in with the real resource
And I did use the decals for the red. I couldn't be bothered to tape off the wing markings.
I have used model Masters Decal Set which would melt the decal into the panel lines and over rivets when you brushed it on over the top of the decal. I just looked it up and it looks like Mr. Mark Softer does something similar. Is there any real difference between the two? I also noticed that there is a product called Mr. Mark Setter for sticking the decal to the model. Have you ever used that product?
