Help making a cheap Marty McFly costume?

So, I know there is no way I'll be able to put together a Marty McFly costume before Halloween, but I'd like to start getting gathering up what I'd need now, so I'll be ready when next year rolls around. My ideal goal would be to have it done by May, since that's when my school has a Senior week, and one of the days is character day, so I'd like to dress up as Marty for that.

At first, I wasn't sure if I was gonna go for a costume based on the first movie, or the second one. But then I decided, why not combine the two? A costume based on the first movie, but with the hover board and sports almanac from Part II.

As of right now, I don't have anything I'll need, so I've got a lot of work to do. I'd like to know what the best choices would be for each piece of the outfit? I'd like to try to get the pieces as cheap as possible, but the more screen accurate the better.

Anyway, here's what I've found so far. Are these good, or should I look elsewhere?

Things I'm still looking for:
The shirt Marty wears under his vest
Eastpak Backpack
The shoes
Whatever else you guys think I might need

You need to ask yourself WHICH Marty McFly costume you want to make first.

The hat, almanac, and hoverboard belong to BTTF2 Marty, but the orange vest is only ever seen on BTTF1 Marty. The hoverboard could also be used on BTTF3's Marty, but that requires a whole different costume that you'd likely have to build from scratch.

So, start with figuring out which one you want to be, and then figure out what pieces you need from there. Otherwise you're likely to start piecing together 3 different costumes and finishing none.

Another important thing to remember since you say you want it cheap but as accurate as possible: Good, Fast, Cheap; pick any two. If you want something that is Good and Cheap, you likely won't get it fast (aka off the rack) and will likely require a lot of time on your part to make the pieces. If you want Fast and Cheap, you'll have give up some accuracy to get things. If you want Fast and Good, expect to pay for it! Keeping that in mind should help you figure out what you're really looking for.

I want to make a BTTF1 Marty costume, but as I said in my original post, I'm thinking about combining the BTTF1 costume with the BTTF2 costume, but I'm still not sure if I'll do that. It might be easier to just start with BTTF1 Marty, and then if I get some money, move on to making a BTTF2 Marty costume. I'll figure it out though. Thanks for the help, Nick.

In terms of the backpack, I picked one of these up recently just for my everyday use. I chose it due to the Marty kind of vibe it gives off. While nowhere near SA, if you're looking for something close enough on a budget, it might work for you?

Hope this helps! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181255367...49&var=480297079104&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

[Mods, if you need to remove the link, I fully understand - it's not my item, just something I bought recently for myself!]

Walmart sells an "Ozark Trail" brand backpack, in maroon, that could pass for the Eastpak with some minor work.

It's darker in person. You can find them back in the camping section.

I just picked up a burnt-orange puffer vest for $19.99 at my local TJ Maxx. Usually $55, so. It's really close to the right color. Looks red in some lighting, like the one in the movie. Much better than the "safety-orange" color a lot of people go for, or the red I had to settle with last year.

Is this the vest you just picked up?

its almost identical to the vest I just got today from Old Navy, I'm a smaller dude so I needed the youth XXL but they also sell it in standard men's sizes and toddler sizes. Also it's a darker orange in person than in the picture. I wasn't even in the market for a vest because I plan on having a SA vest made at some point but I couldn't help myself when I saw it on the rack ha ha.

Nope. Not that one. I actually like it more than the one I got, which is a Field & Stream thing. I looked, and couldn't find it online. The one I got has this annoying logo on the chest, but whatever. Maybe someday I'll make the effort for a SA version, but as a poor college kid, I take what I can get.
