Here's my humble costume contribution. It's not nearly as complicated as many of the awesome costumes here; but I was really happy with how it turned out.
I did this costume for a contest a few years ago. It's from one of my favorite movies, Michael Mann's "Heat".
It started with a black pinstripe suit from the Good Will (if you're gonna rob a bank, you might as well do it in style). Black dress shows, white dress shirt, black and grey tie, black gloves; typical business attire. The sunglasses were some cheapo dollar store aviators that I modified.
Figuring out the equipment system was the fun / hard part. The sling was easy, as they used the same setup at the beginning of the movie for the armored truck heist. It's a bungee cord or rope (I used rope) that goes around the shoulders and back in a figure 8. A carabiner connects to the weapon side of the cord, and connects to the rifle stock via a zip tie.
The load bearing vest appeared to be made from a grey suit vest, attached together with a zipper instead of buttons. I attached the magazines with fabric strips hot glued to the vest. This was the hardest part to replicate; but I think I got it right.
Used the largest black bag I could find and stuffed it with a blanket.
The rifle was a spring airsoft gun.
