HCG ALIENS HERO M41A PULSE RIFLE - Modification Thread

Well... consider my warranty void. Made my first cut on the stock. Cut roughly 4mm off. Give me your thoughts and criticism. I think it should be a little thinner but am thinking I may just clean up what we have here and let that be it for this part. Still need to also go around and file down more of the edges.

I'd leave it like that and just file the corners/edges down a little so they look like the real PR. Although it is cut crooked on this side of the original stock , it looks like the other side was cut straight going by the shadow you can just see.

Mine are slightly crooked as well. I will try to straighten them a bit but won't kill myself over it. I will try to get the corners and edges handled tonight and will then consider the stock finished aside from weathering it.

Art, you're a true hero and rebel! Matt, so are you, but you didn't have to pay for yours, so I gotta give Art the glory here. ;) heehee Lookin good, man! I think your stock looks to be the perfect width overall. The screenused one you're referencing was cut crooked on that one side, so it's thinner closer to the top. Put that wonk in there if you want, but other wise I wouldn't touch the stock any more.

Looks great to me. I was really happy to see the square tubing style material used for the stock as opposed to the commonly chosen channel material.

Excellent idea for a thread, btw. I'll be glad to offer a few pointers and ideas as they come to mind. There is no way that I would want to encourage people to void warranties but when done correctly, brings quite the liberating feeling. :)

Man, I haven't even gotten to see the comparison pics he took and there are already 2 pages AND he has voided our warranty! Way to go babe ;) Gotta say, I actually liked Matsuo's pulse rifle a little better on some of the details, but we will see how this one looks once it is modified and weathered. Gonna be a darn heavy one for me to troop with!

Alright, I went back and beveled the edges and am pretty happy with it. Now to begin weathering the stock. First, I want to say that the paint on the stock is VERY thick and it takes quite a bit to cut through it. I could really use some help and suggestions with weathering ideas. I basically have three techniques:

1) I have a bag of small sharp stones that I pour into a large metal bowl and then grind the stones across the paint. Sometimes this takes paint away, but more often than not, it just scratches the paint without scratching through the paint, especially on paint as thick as this.

2) Literally dragging the gun across dirt or concrete.

3) taking an exacto blade and scraping it across edges. While I think this method is good, it can look the most forced and unnatural.

So here is where I am now, using those three methods. I would be very interested in hearing your ideas and methods!

Maybe try using heavy grit sandpaper for the evenly worn areas along the edges.

I won't being doing as extensive a modifications as you, but when I get mine I 'd like to strip the paint off of at least the shrouds and the barrel/ barrel vent. Do some masking for heavy scratches and wear marks and then repaint it. After that do some more grime and grit weathering to it as well.

Buy some heavy duty paint stripper and blot it on where you'd like the paint to look chipped. Let it sit for a few minutes and then wash away with water. It should remove the paint.

Good call, Jerry. I will see what I can find tomorrow. If I could get the stock all the way off, it would make the process a lot easier.

Try rubbing metal parts with the head of a hammer. If they have cut outs and such like the stock and vent it with rub the edges and lips unevenly and wear them. Also any wear from "hammering" on the head will keep it from being overly regular. If parts have really crisp and/or sharp edges it can also round them down some.

maybe my technique is just poor but whenever I use sandpaper it always looks... like I used sandpaper. I have great difficulty making sandpaper create natural looking weathering.

Go out trooping with it on a sling. One night of rubbing on your armor and it will look just right. Just from playing with mine it looks like the paint will scratch off no problem.

So who is going to be the first to crack open the shrouds? I already figured out that ALL the allen bolts are glued into place. Are the shrouds epoxied together? Oh...the counter window is held on with a small dab of glue along with the two self tapping screws.

I know Matsuo has already cracked one open and said he would talk more about it at a later point.

I think the key to any weathering is not to overdo it. Take an exacto along the edges, put in a few scratches...that's all I'd aim for.

The stock trimming looks MUCH better. Nice job.
