Haunted Mansion props, pieces and inspiration.

So for a few years now I have been running a blog that features the creations of my daughter and I. We have props, and miniatures, and all sorts of projects. One thing we have been working on is an evolutionary process of turning our house into the haunted mansion for a neighborhood Halloween party. I have posted these on the RPF someplace a while back but this seemed like the perfect threat.

Everything we have has been made from scratch, on a budget, mostly using insulation foam and craft items. Occasionally I have had to resort to some more expensive pro supplies like Freeform Air from Smooth O. But, I try to keep almost of them under 40$ a piece. They were designed for a moderate maker to be able to create them. I did not want to get into a lot of 3d printing, laser cutting, and mold making. They were written up with a DIY kind of informal instructions on our blog The Imagine Ears

We have also done the stretching portraits and about every single painting you see on the ride.

I have plans for about 5 more builds for this year. I want to try to get a more accurate wooden scull corbel and more accurate organ pipe ghost head. I have some big projects up too. I will post them here. When I get them done.

By any chance does anyone have or would be willing to scan the new death certificates that come with the Spirit Jars recently released? I haven’t been able to find any decent images online and can’t afford to buy one right now. Would love to edit the text and use them for friends to personalize as a party favor for Halloween during my haunted mansion ball. Any help would be appreciate

The wreath isn't something I've thought of before, but that does look cool on the door like that.

A friend of mine made this one a while back. Took a few thousand leaves to make up the wreath. I love the extra vines taking over the room. I plan on making Cleopatra next year, that’s the Addams Family house plant of Morticia’s

It's been a while since I've stopped by, been busy with little projects and the holidays. I've completed my first of the four stretching portraits. I thought I would share a picture of the first one completed. I also have a project page that lives here.

So I’ve been holding out from a while here but have intent to start posting my creations. Two years ago I started going full steam ahead with turning our house into a full on Haunted Mansion. Each Halloween we open the doors to the public for tours. Last year was around 450 people and growing each time. Some of my favorite props my roommate and I made I’ll post here if people are interested. Working on adding more before October this year

Still have a bit of tinkering, but here is my 1870 Eastlake Pump Organ I use in the “ballroom” for Halloween. Originally picked up for $100 in a hot storage shed in south FL. The inside wasn’t repairable, so my roommate and I gutted the inside. This past year we have added servo motors that pull the keys down in correct order with each note programmed to play the HM music sequence. This also controls a time release fog machine which pumps smoke out of the main two pipes at the top made from PVC plumbing and aged with spray paint. The organ works as a master control with magnetic key pulls at the keyboard that control various things like the LED light strips hidden behind the rooms curtains I put together. Everything is currently run on a Raspberry Pi. The LED illuminating lights below the organ pipes also move in sequence with the music too. Probably the best prop in the house currently. If anyone can figure out how I can post a video, I have some of it in motion

I’ve also built a two way mirror out of a very old antique hall mirror from the 1880’s I salvaged a few years back. Used with dark window tint over glass, deconstructed flat screen tv mounted vertical and run on a Raspberry Pi. Was able to track down a really good copy of the Hatchet Bride, except the video is cut off just at the waist, but plan to add a wood panel to the front to make up for the space. Speakers are hidden behind the faux brass door grill (which I’d like to have made in brass or metal at some point) and the subwoofer is hidden in the trunk. There is a mini fan and a cheap LED stage light hidden under the brides dress that light up and move to match with the bride as well as her wedding cake I modeled from styrofoam rounds and a mixture of wall spackle and drywall filler which under black lights add an eerie glow effect

Meant to post these months ago, but here are the 2019 party favors I made for our annual Haunted Mansion ball this past October. Fairly easy to make and about $2 each in material cost. I made roughly about 36 of these little 2” bottles. All you need is sticker/label paper, a good printer, rubber cement for putting together the boxes, black ribbon, card stock for favor boxes, sealing wax, vinegar and food coloring for bottle filler, small glass bottles with cork, tissue paper and a lot of time to cut out everything.

I first started with the box template which can be found online and sticker labels were found on google, then resized labels to fit all in one sheet. It take a while to cut out every box. Each favor took from start to finish about 7-10 minutes, so have a lot of patience. After cutting out the boxes, use rubber cement glue on white tab pieces. Allow to dry for a minute or two before sticking together. It’s best to start a mini assembly line of boxes.

For the bottles, print out the stickers and cut then stick on each empty bottle. Fill each bottle nearly full, but leave enough room for the cork and add 1-2 drops of dye in any color you prefer or mix multiple colors for various shades. (Note with these corks, they did tend to leak through, hence sealing wax seals them completely from leaks. Finish off with the wax by slowly melting and rotate bottles as you go to evenly disperse wax.

For the finishing touches, cut tissue paper in any color preferred. I used purple and black cut to 5x5” to fit in each box. Use 2 pieces of tissue paper per box. I used one to wrap the bottle in and the second to line the box. Finish off by closing the box and tying a nice thin black ribbon around box into a simple bow. These make really cool and unique party favors for Halloween, weddings and gifts for any Haunted Mansion fans. I had so much fun with these that I have since made larger versions!

A collection of some of my DIY made Spirit Jars. The larger ones I repurposed from antique pharmacy bottles on eBay. Each one took under 10 minutes to make and about $30/bottle online. 5 down and 4 more to go to complete the collection. Printed out the labels on stick paper and used a mixture of craft glue and white paint diluted with water for white rustic look running down the bottles
