Harry Potter: Hogwarts Textbooks

Juno, the Cannons book looks great, I prefer the second image for the back cover too.

ecl you've done an amazing job with the Advanced Potion Making book, looks like it really has been laying in a Potion closest in Hogwarts for years, unused :) I really look forward to the finished item with the silver details

I say move around, read some threads, and make some cool stuff. That's my cure-all!

I know NikiLenart and Lemonlemonuk are working on potion's book contents. Are you writing a book, too, ecl?

Thanks juno. I was just referring to how weird it feels posting to a different HP thread after being heavily involved with the Hinkypunk thread for the last several months. I'm just a little discumboberarted right now is all.

No i doubt i'll be doing any writing hehe; that would be just too tremendous for me to tackle but i'd love to read some of it :lol

The journal that I used has ugly lined pages...so I'm not really sure what i'll do with the inside pages. If I can find blank pages about the same size I might just do that. It would be something else if it could be filled with real potions text in it. It's amazing to me some people are actually writing full text for these books. Really awesome.

I don't know that I could do the full text, either. I'm getting ready to embark on a big writing project, and I'm both looking forward to and dreading it.

I guess if you love what you're doing, it's never work! I might have a go at the fourth potions book. It'd be neat to do it as a clean-looking companion piece for the HBP book.

I didn't mention it as it's not Harry Potter-related. My niece (she's eleven) has a favorite author and I'm collaborating with the author to do a prop from her upcoming book. It's a spell book, so it will have plenty of writing.

I completely agree with you Juno about exploring the whole site, not just one thread. Bfd explained it better than I could. I do go exploring a lot actually, but the hinky thread was sort of like my RPF 'home'. It was a place where a bunch of people knew each other and were all collected in one spot. Now we aren't so much in touch very easily.

On the topic of Harry potter books:
I present to you... The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore! I even went out and bought a green highlighter to make the edges green. Art credit to Hinky

Great Job on the book Luke, it looks really good. I also agree with what you and Bfd said too. Though to be honest its nice to be back on this thread, its where most of us first got chatting, so it's a bit like coming home. We'll always have Hogwarts :)

@Lukeforest1: Book looks good. Its the little touches like the green hi liter edging that bring it to life.

Hey Luke,
What type of paper did you end up printing the Rita Skeeter cover on? It looks a little thicker than regular printer paper.

Thanks for all the positive feedback! If you plan on making one I forewarn you that the green edges took me about and hour and a half (and I didn't even do the bottom)
It is in fact printed on super cheap, thin, crappy copy paper from staples... I think I'll replace it with a semi-gloss next time I get the chance.

I've started to add some silver foil to the letters on the potions book. I'm using liquid silver leaf and painting it on there because I'm not sure if there is any other accurate way to do that that I'm comfortable with.

The thing about the silver is that it can look dark under different light and it kinda disappears because the surface around the words is about the same darkness. But this happens with reflective silver/gold. Not sure how I feel about that yet, although I think the original would have similar qualities. I'm kind of thinking maybe just leaving it white and just painting back the letters. Not sure yet!

@ecl, looks great! I personally love the silver... but it's your book. Two questions, what kind of paper did you print on and where did you get the art?
Thanks

Thanks Luke; The paper is called "Rives" printmaking paper: white, 115gsm. They sell it in larger sheets and is about $2-3 a sheet. It also comes in a cream color. I think it's pretty versatile paper if you're looking to replicate a more worn look, but if you want to print on it with an inkjet, you would have to coat it first with a medium that prepares misc. paper for inkjet printers, otherwise the print won't be as crisp. I can't remember the name right now, will have to check what that stuff is called.

The front and back cover was scanned from the replica inside the Harry Potter Film Wizardry book. I tweaked the "Potion Making" title in photoshop to make it more screen accurate (direction of shadow, deleting the "-", and moving the "aking" in "Making" up a little.) The spine was from Elliot's version he posted in one of the potter threads!

The silver is kinda cool...i'll probably sit on it for a while haha

Very nice work on the book ecl.

For the silver foil you could also try, laser transfer foil.
It's a bit hard to use it at first, but once you get it, the results are quite good.
I'm suggesting because I think it's an easier way to make it and the foil will have a better metallic effect.

@Tenno: Sure, I could do a write up on the process/materials when I finish this one to my liking. I'm still experimenting with a few techniques.

@Monster_05: That's a really interesting suggestion! I looked up the process online and it certainly sounds like a good thing to try. I'll have to look into the technique
