@juno: I also like the back cover in the bottom picture. Looks clean and is a nice contract to the busy front cover.

@ecl: Just a little darkening of the scuffed parts on the edge of the cover and you've got yourself an nice looking ratty old book. :thumbsup

The highlight on the cauldron is probably from the lighting. On some of my references the cover seems to have almost a satin finish on some parts, unlike the canvas looking texture seen in the film wizardry book one.

I printed on printmaking paper, which was spray mounted onto a hardcover journal, then used the exacto knife and sandpaper to get the wearing effect. The paper sands really well and has a nice fuzzy look to it!

Okay, this is crazy, but the photos I have from the exhibit are of a completely different book layout. (But it doesn't have a shadow in the cauldron, so you're probably right.) Looking at my photos, the cover appears to have a light texture. In my notes, I just have "cloth" written down.

I'm thinking there are variations among the props themselves. I have one reference that looks like it has some light cloth texture (like the film wizardry one) and the one from the shot where harry first opens the book in class looks slightly smoother...but it's in a dark candle lit kind of light so it's hard to really see. Kinda drives me nuts. But I do like the cloth texture look more.

Love the work you are doing with the Flying with the Canons book Juno! I like the bottom one more too, with the snitch on the back. It's beautiful

The potions book I saw had the four cauldrons on the cover and was listed as "Edition IV." So I must've saw the new student's books as opposed to Snape's.

Its not uncommon for there to be many versions of a prop made for different purposes in the movie and even for promotional work. Just have to settle in on one you like/want to do and go with it.

I know Juno, it's just that everyone thats suddenly come back to this thread is kinda using it as a crutch to get along... we were all avid fans of Hinkypunk's thread... Not to say thread is "inferior" or or something, we just miss our old thread (that got shut down).
This is where we all were before Hinky's thread, and now were kinda back at square one.

Threads are just threads. This forum is actually the community. It seems odd to want to limit yourself to just one thread when there's so much going on. There's a lot to learn and share.

For example, this thread is about making Fallout books. Do I care about Fallout? No. But I can appreciate good weathering (and totally yoink the technique for my own replicas).

There's also a whole off-topic forum full of (ta-da!) off-topic discussions.

I honestly don't see how you're all back at square one. It's just a thread, and all Hinkypunks' freebies are still there.
