I know it is still technically several months away, but who says we can't start celebrating early.

Post pics of your ESB related props/costume.

Try to explain why ESB is the best film in the entire SW series.

Try to explain (if you can) why it is not. :)

Thanks Neil!

These candles, out he will blow them. Hmmmm.

Probably try to eat them.

So who is going to explain to me how ESB is not the best film in the series?
I'd love to hear your thoughts. I know there are some ANH diehards.

ESB is rubbish.

After this second prototype, trainwreck of a movie, George went on to perfect the formula with TPM.

I have to say I'm one of those that prefers ANH, not by much though.
Don't ask me why though, lol. I don't even know myself. I just do. :)

I'm not even gonna ask what that cake is made from.
Who knows what Yoda can get hold of on Dagobah.

Well ANH is, obviously, STAR WARS. The movie that created the innovation, and brought the "never seen before" aspect in '77. It remains, to me, the best of the bunch. But that's sentimental.

ESB is technically and story wise a "much bigger and much more complex" movie, to quote Kersh'. So yeah, ESB is harder/better/faster/stronger but ANH has a flavour only "first" movies have. I mean it's STAR WARS for crying out loud. ANH made ESB what it is !

First, congrats on you Yoda, captures the soul of the character so well!

I'm more into ROTJ (minus the damn Ewoks) because I like vader in ROTJ. The arrival at DS 2 caught me so much regarding the suit and the helmet.

BUT

ESB is definately the far more better movie. Much more emphasis on character, everytime I put in my DVD I watch ESB because this gives me the most out of the saga.

Kershner did a hell of a job on ESB and he was an extremely good director who understood his work (compared to Marquand who in my opinion just did what Lucas told him to do).

The overall flair and feeling watching ESB is...hard to explain.

What I don't understand is the fact, that Lucas was so worried that Yoda won't work and that the audience will not accept the puppet as a full character, but in ROTJ he used puppets and alien creatures a lot, which I think is another major downfall in ROTJ because most of them look not really well (especially the Gamorrean Guards or some of the mugs on the barge), not to speak about the Ewoks.

Finally in ESB the story was so deeply going into the characters and in ROTJ it was just a dictated storyline.

Kershner should have directed ROTJ as well.

All in all: ESB is the best of the trilogy.

For sure. Sometimes Vader's ROTJ suit is my favorite as well (I flip flop between his ESB and ROTJ). And the emperor is my all time favorite SW character.

+1 about the muppets, I mean creatures in ROTJ.

ESB gave us Yoda, and Boba Fett.

I think the ESB musical score is my favorite.

ESB is not the greatest film in the series because it is incomplete. You can't watch it without having seen the movie that comes before it, and it doesn't have an ending -- you have to watch the movie after it, as well.

It's still a great movie, no argument from me there. But I thought the story was over at the end of what is now called ANH, and if that movie hadn't been quite as well-received as it was, then that would have been the end.

ESB is better made and more sophisticated. ANH is more exuberant and fun (and at the time, totally new and unexpected).

For a long time I went around saying ESB was "better" than ANH but got tired of clarifying myself to ANH fans. :lol Now I think of them as separate and equal. Both are fantastic.

Then again just last night I was in a comic book store and overheard one of the young clerks making fun of how stupid he thought the dialogue was in ESB, which he apparently had just watched for the first time... "What terrible dialogue.... 'You must go to the Dagobah system!' 'I thought they smelled bad on the outside!' huh huh huh." Somehow I restrained myself from punching him. :rolleyes

I second that. They made ANH in a way that they could have ended it right there if it didn't work well with the audience. Things worked out great, as we all know, and we got the sequels. And the prequels. And the clone wars cartoon. And the clone wars movie. Maybe it worked TOO well. :lol

I love the dialogue in ESB - witty banter, sexual tension , life-lessons and techno-talk. It's good. It was great when I watched it for the first time as a kid in the theatre, I learned so much more about the SW universe! It was mind-blowing back then, a thrill-ride which seemed to offer me some depth and understanding of something bigger than myself - the force, spirituality..whatever you want to call it.

And that ending - it was sublime...never since has an ending promised so much, made a kid wait for so long and...delivered so little!

Aw, I don't really mean that, I love ROTJ too.

You just have to listen to DVD commentary, Lucas is talking about anything BUT the actors. Kershner is explaining why and how he had this or that actor do this ... A world of difference between these people.

ESB rocks !!!

Your stronger than me, I would not have been able to restrain myself.

ESB the best movie ever!

Thats why I had to have Jeremy Bulloch (Fett) in my movie as the main bad guy. The is filmed called 'Turpin' the trailer is here:

When we were and on set he was telling us all loads of stories of shooting ESB and ROTJ ...and ROTS! Great guy. I saw him recently at a troop in the National Space Centre in England and Jeremy put on his Boba Fett suit and started walking around with the rest of the stormtrooper it was amazing!!!!
