Hand painting in the Japanese style

Well this is pretty encouraging, finally. Took a dive into Laquerland™, and tried to walk a few steps in Kow Yokoyama's shoes with my painting... I'm not quite done, of course. I need to now add a few filter washes that will melt the decals into the laquer, and dirty up the feet and hoses, add "lens paint" to the sensors, and rust up that exhaust. I'm pleased for what is still an elementary hand-painted attempt.

This captures the color best:

And even though the led lighting shifts the color incorrectly, it's interesting to see next to my "Western style" stuff:

Ah, when I saw the title I hoped this would be on Kow's style. Very nice! I painted my old P.K.A. Ausf M conversion by hand back in the day, too, but didn't get results quite that nice.

How did Lin.K paint his buildup of your Luna Diver - was it the same approach? I'm actually not a big fan of the ship itself, but man, that paint job was so nice that I'd have bought one if I'd had the money at the time. :(

So. Lacquers? Tell us more!

I sure do! Lots of pretty pictures ;)

Thanks guys! So yeah, laquers - specifically Gaianotes and Mr.Color, both thinned with "Mr. Self Leveling Thinner", heh.

You start off with a base color (in my case, black), and build successive layers from there. It's terrifying if you haven't done it before, because it looks like ASS until the last few layers start tying things together - and also keep in mind that each pass reactivates the previous layer, and that the self-leveling aspect of the thinner will soften lines and even brush strokes. It's freaky-deaky stuff.

But check out how well Yokoyama-san paints with this stuff:

His flesh tones are pretty snazzy too:

And check out how GOOD Lincoln is!! He has that luxury of living in Japan and being pals with Yokoyama-san, heh!

I looked, and I had to stop looking when my eyes filled with tears. Dammit, I used to think I could paint.

I hate you guys.

You just cant get that intensity/depth of colour with acrylics - as much as I love them. My favourite finish on any of my models are the couple I did with lacquer. Maybe I should go back to them one day! The work on display here is inspirational, always love your work Jason!
