Halo Fan Film Props

Hey there RPF! I'm currently working on a Halo fan film and I figured I would put my pre-production prop work up here. The story of the fan film is more of a political/civilian story, so there aren't any armor-clad characters to work with, making the prop work a bit more lax. But even though the prop-work isn't super crazy, I wanted to make some really cool stuff that we haven't really see a whole lot of in the games, but still had relevance to the lore.

First up, one of the characters works for JOTUN Heavy Industries, which is a company that builds primarily farming combines but also the UNSC Elephant as well as its civilian garbage collector counterpart the Oliphant. So I wanted him to bear the logo somewhere. I decided that a hat would be a good prop to do that on. So I had the logo custom embroidered on a worn hat.

200px-JOTUN_logo.png

Here is the logo, and below it can be seen on the hat... on my head no less.

JOTUN Hat.jpg

I wanted to make some other references to civilian corporations as well, so the next prop is a t-shirt bearing the Fronk's Fish logo. As far as references go, this is a pretty obscure one. The company's logo can be seen only in Longshore, a multiplayer map from Halo 3. It was some manner of seafood company a la Gorton's Fish Sticks. Below is a screenshot from the game.

So with a bit of photoshop magic, I managed to make a pretty clean looking logo seen here:

Fronks TSHIRT.png

And here it can be seen on a shirt that will be visible somewhere in the short:

Next up, we have a bit of backstory. The main character has some personal ties with the now-destroyed colony world of Harvest. As the story goes the main character will find a box of old junk, inside which they will find a postcard sent from their father. It's the last message they have of him so it has a lot of sentimental value. So I had to design a postcard that could be found on Harvest. And since Harvest was a farming colony, I went with the whole farming motif and made it based on old city postcards. The result can be seen below.

Harvest Postcard.jpg

You can see one of the many orbital elevators in the silhouetted background. The image in the lettering is from concept art of the Halo 4 map, Harvest. The background however is my own design. Below, it can be seen on an actual postcard. I got it custom made at Zazzle. That's also where I got the shirt and hat.

And lastly for now, We have a 3D printed Magnum. The model is by Dan0nator on Thingiverse. I was planning on modeling it myself since 3D modeling is what I do for a living, lol, but time constraints forced my hand and Dan0nator's model is fantastic. Here is the model somewhat assembled. It still needs to be sanded down in preparation for paint.

Magnum Print.jpg

I will also likely remove the laser sight as the pistol in the film will be owned by an ONI office worker so I didn't want it to be a combat pistol. It will more closely resemble the M6C from Halo 2. Although I will most likely keep the nickel finish as opposed to the all black scheme the M6C generally has.

That's it for now. There are a few more on the list. A Spoofer will definitely be making an appearance in the film. In the Halo Universe a Spoofer is a portable terminal that can lock and unlock doors as well as bypass other types of electronics.

Anyway, let me know what you guys think. Any questions, comments, and critiques are welcome. I'll likely be updating soon.

Blam!

What's up RPF?! It's been a minute since I uploaded, but pre-production is still truckin' along. I've got a few more process pics for you. They actually feature 2 new props. The script has been finished and is in the proofreading/editing stage, but it's pretty close to being the final product. Anyway, the script calls for two new props, an MA5K and a Spoofer.

MA5K -

So, I built this bad boy back when I was in school. I drew a vector file of each layer then cut it out of acrylic on the Laser Cutter. In hindsight I wish I would have used wood or literally anything but acrylic, lol. If I still had the original file, I would have just re-cut it, but alas, it is on an old hard-drive that has gone the way of the Death Star. I thought I fixed it once, but then it died again and went the way of the second Death Star. Anywho, I decided to modify my already somewhat finished MA5K. I never made a barrel for it, so that was first on my list. Second would be a grip. Below is the model before I added anything:

Below is a drawing of where I wanted to take it.

Then, I grabbed some Aluminum Rod and lathed the crap out of it.

The MA5K fires a 7.62x51 round which is a .308. I kinda cheated and just used an 5/16 drill bit which is .312, but I figured it was close enough. It's not like I'll actually be firing real ammunition out of it... ...or will I? OR WILL I?!!!

sorry. moving on.

Holy crap it's a Barrel. That's really all I've accomplished so far. I've tried a few different methods to get the grip going, but nothing has been working as well as I want. I was gonna mill it out of wood, but the wood I have doesn't machine very well, I think I've decided to sculpt it out of chavant. It'll give me a little more freedom and then I can mold it and cast it out of a soft resin, giving it a nice grip-like feeling... yeah, the good stuff... mmmmmm... sorry again.

Spoofer -

The Spoofer is a door hacking device that can only ever be seen for like 5 seconds in Halo CE. So reference was SUPER easy to come by... /sarcasm. Anyway, I modeled it in Solidworks based on the best pictures I could find, then I took the file to the shop at my school to print out the mechanical drawing. Then I realized that the Solidworks I have at work is 2015 and the Solidworks at school is 2013, so instead of being patient, waiting a day, and down saving it, I decided to be ridiculous and just draft it from memory by hand... No Regrets... well, maybe a few, but I think it turned out pretty close to my original model.

This guy was turning out pretty good, but I was having trouble getting the grooves right. They look Okay in the pic, but close up they're a bit wonky, so I cut the pieces apart and routed the edges, so when they're fastened together, they'll look a lot better.

The face will be hollowed out and there will be a screen inside. It's a little LCD TV module that has a Composite in cable, so I'm going to hook it up to my iPod which will be housed inside the prop as well. I have an ancient 5G iPod Video that has a video-out function. So there will be a video playing with the interface on it. I also will be making buttons for the front. I may sculpt and cast those as well, because in my search, I haven't been able to find any the right size or shape. Also, they should be clear so they can light up, because... you know... lights are neat.

I'll keep all yinz updated and post some more pics soon. Questions/Comments/Criticism, all welcome.

Nearly forgot! I'm also in the process of coming up with concepts for Halo Themed Warfare Badges. For those of you who aren't familiar with what a warfare badge is, sit down... it's story time.

Well it's not that long of an explanation. Basically when you're in the military and you've been doing a certain job or been in a certain unit for long enough, you get a warfare badge to signify your service. So if you've been stationed on a ship for long enough, you can get a Surface Warfare Badge. If you've been in the Intelligence sector long enough you'll receive an Information Dominance Warfare Badge. The US Navy generally has ships or submarines on their surface/subsurface badges, so seeing as how the UNSC Navy is the Space Navy, I figured I'd make a few halo themed badges that will ultimately be worn by the film's 2 uniformed characters. They'll both be wearing working uniforms so the badges will be displayed above their ribbons. Anyway, here are a few concepts to give you an idea of where I'm going. I plan on sculpting them then casting them in resin with metal flake so give them the metal look.

Here are some pics of the warfare badge sculpt. This is one of hopefully 3. This one is a UNSC take on the Navy's Surface Warfare badge. The other two will most likely be Expeditionary and Information Dominance. Keep in mind this thing is really small, so the detail was pretty tedious.

It's a UNSC Cruiser with crossed sabers and a planet in the background. Here's a pic of it being molded. I generally use GI-1000 tin-cure silicone. It usually has a 14 hour cure time, but even after 24 hours, it still hadn't kicked completely, so I gave it another day, and it's totally fine now. My catalyst measurement may have been off slightly.

Here's the MA5K getting sanded down. It was painted before, but you could still see the layers of acrylic, so I grabbed some Bondo and went at it. Sorry for the blurry photos, I didn't have my DSLR on hand, so I had to use my phone.

I also decided to add a tactical rail with a Holographic scope. I wasn't sure if I was gonna like it, but after I put it on to test it, I think it looks pretty sweet. The gun still needs some work, but it's always nice to put it all together to see where it's headed. Also, the grip was sculpted out of Apoxie-sculpt. It's not solid, there's some insulation foam in there for filler. If you haven't used Apoxie-sculpt before, you definitely should, it's awesome. It becomes rock solid, but it sands really well. Even so, as big as this piece was, it needed some lovin'. So more Bondo and it's on its way.

That's it for now. Let me know what you guys think. Questions, Comments, Critiques, are all welcome.

Great job. I have been waiting to see a fan film based on non combatants. Especially love Fronk's shirt. best of luck, cant wait for the film!

As far as progress goes, We're almost done with casting. Casting roles that is. Not to be confused with casting molds, although that's coming up as well. But now that casting is almost complete, I had to start designing costumes. As this is a mostly civilian story, the need for armor is non-existent. However, ONI plays a large role in the story, so I wanted to design an ONI/Navy working uniform. Most of the uniforms seen in any live-action medium have been dress uniforms. I wanted to make something that hasn't really been seen. I found some reference from Halo 3 and really liked the design of the uniforms, but they look more like utility coveralls than working uniforms.

Working_Uniform.JPG

So with this reference, and the abundant reference of dress uniforms, I had to find a happy medium. This is the finished result.

Uniform.png

So now comes the fun part of patterning this and making it. But that won't be possible until we have both roles that are wearing these cast, so we can get measurements. I have, however, ordered relevant ribbons and racks. I've also had patches custom embroidered. They will hopefully be here by the weekend. Here are the patches. First we have an ONI patch. This was heavily inspired by the utilities that Agent Locke wore in Nightfall. Both uniformed characters will be wearing this on their right shoulder.

ONI Patch.png

Next up is the Petty Officer Second Class or E5 patch. One of the main characters will be wearing this on his left shoulder as well as E5 collar devices (the pins signifying rank on the lapel). He is also a Personnel Specialist. Note the book and quill insignia.

E5 Patch.png

And lastly is the Commander or O5 patch. This will be on the other uniformed character's left shoulder. The chevrons are gold to signify an officer. This character will also be wearing silver leaf/commander collar devices.

O5 Patch.png

I think that's everything for now. Let me know what you guys think. As always, questions, comments, critiques are all welcome.

Just a quick update today. Got the patches, ribbons, and racks today. Just a quick pic. Disregard the Nostromo patch on my Jacket, lol.

Hey there RPF! Casting didn't go as planned and unfortunately, we had to push the project back. The script originally took place in winter, but with the casting delays, it got pushed back into spring. That said, it's not super important whether it's winter or spring, I was just writing to cater to when I assumed we'd shoot. But now that we missed the winter window, we're aiming for Spring/Summer. That'll give us some extra time to get the props and wardrobe up to par. With all that in mind, here is the most recent model of the Spoofer. It will most likely be 3d printed, but unlike the Magnum, I modeled this bad boy myself.

Above, you can see part 1 of 3 in the assembly.

The slot on the bottom in the above picture is for my 5th Generation iPod Video. That's what will play the video to the LCD Screen. Below you can see the plate that will attach to the bottom to keep the iPod in place.

Below is the back access panel that will allow me to connect cables and wires to the screen as well as the lights.

Is this going on YT when is is done? If so I look forward to watching it! I agree we haven't seen anything on the civilian side of the Halo Universe. Damn you are making leaps and strides! You are making new stuff every minute! well done keep going!

Thanks Guys!

It will most likely be making its way to YouTube, I'm also going to try and see if 343i will put it on the Community section of the Halo Channel on the Xbox One. Either way, I'll keep this thread updated and let you all know what's going on.

And so it begins...

20150410_112755.jpg

sorry for the quality, the lights in the machine aren't super bright and the door is pretty dirty, so my camera didn't want to focus.

Hey 405th, The Spoofer printed perfectly (as far as I can see that is). You can see below all of the support material I now have to get rid of.

20150413_085040.jpg

20150413_085048.jpg

But before I get rid of the support, I have to drain the Acid bath and refill it. It's getting a bit gross in there.

20150413_085925.jpg

I should have some clean 3d print pictures by the end of the day. Stay tuned.

UPDATE!!!

So I got the support off the print and I put it together for a test fit. Here is a quick pic of the Spoofer with the LCD screen in and on. I 3D modeled the dimensions just right so I don't actually have to fasten the screen in, it just kinda pops in there. Same with the magnets I used to attach the access panel.

20150414_000737.jpg

And below, I took a quick video showing the innards of the spoofer and how it all goes together. My iPod was dead when I took this, so the video isn't going, but you can see where everything sits.

Let me know what you guys think. As always, questions, comments, critiques, all welcome.

Hey RPF! I received my shipment from Adafruit yesterday. It had 3 EL Panels, two of which will become the back lights for the key-pad on the Spoofer. I ordered an extra just in case. It's not a bad habit to get into. But since I've got an extra, I was thinking of ways to use it and figured I'd model something in Solidworks.

Who can tell me what it is? It's slightly modified of course.

If I decide to actually 3D print it, it will be a proof of concept. I plan on using the EL Panel as a screen, but it will just create the glow. The actual contents of the screen would be added in post. That's how it works in my head anyway, lol. Either way it'll be a cool prop to make. This was just kind of a side-project. Besides, you can never have too many Halo themed CNC-ready 3d Models.

TimSnowman, I'm actually in the city as well. I do a lot of work with painting and distressing for film, so let me know if you need an extra pair of hands on this.

Thanks, I'll definitely let you know. The more hands, the better in my opinion.

Why, it's one of those! I'd recognize it anywhere!

... Do I have to turn in my geek card now?

Haha, I wouldn't go that far, it's a pretty obscure prop in the Halo Universe.

So this happened.

The pic above is pre-acid bath. The ones below, however, are after a 3 hour long soak.

I'll have more pics later after I play with the EL Panel screen and inverter.
