HalloweenCostumes.com "Back to the Future 2 Light Up Shoes"

Re: HalloweenCostumes.com "Back to the Future 2 Light Up Shoes"

Sheep ! I think I'm gonna have to forget about this mod. Or do it by painting the letters on the paint I made on the HCs (I've sanded it before but not too much)

I didn't replaced anything inside the shoe. I've got rid of all the foam that were inside and cut fabric from it and reused it fo patch some parts on the upper.
For the ribs (they appear when the shoes you put a feet in) I've cut some piece of the foam and put it back in (that's why I messed up with the glue near the toe box : there are some strains... :/ )
For the laces, these are the original laces from HC... so I don't really know, but they're too big and I noticed that they haven't placed them the same height on both shoes -_-
I'll post all the pictures later - when I'll be good to glue the upper on the shoe. ;)

I would still consider giving it a try. Maybe your buckle is high enough to avoid the problem.

My HC is the original seafoam the buckle is sitting right on top of the cup. On your newer smooth-side HC, the back of the puff collar is a little higher so your buckle sits higher just from that.

@funkster
How long ago did you get them?

Re: HalloweenCostumes.com "Back to the Future 2 Light Up Shoes"

Fairly sure it was not long after release, so easily 18 months

Oh, okay. So taking them back is a no go.

If they have basically been sitting this whole time, uncharged. Then yes, they are probably shot.

Not really, on this pair, I've added 1 or 1,5cm to the collar to make them look better...
So the basic HCs have this problem.

Let me clarify.

When I had both in hand. I set the 1st gen HC next to the smooth-side HC. Same sizes. The rear of the smooth-side was about half-inch higher. You could see more grey cloth around the top and bottom of the white buckle. So there is a raised collar and the buckle and strap sits a little higher than 1st gen even unmodded. If you went beyond even that, then you might not have to worry about letter scraping at all.

A good test would be to put on your Mags, and point your toes downwards. Is the bottom of the buckle touching the cup? If yes, then you might scrape. If no, then you are probably safe. Another indicator would be the paint itself, if yours scrapes then your paint will show it at the top of the cup.

BTW, I'm really curious how you did that extension.

ah ok, I wasn't aware of that diference between the HCs releases. I was thinking that the only difference were the ribs ;)

I'll post some details about the "extension" I made later (need to finish some other stuffs before)

Yeah, I'm in the UK as well, so not easy.

So,

Hairdryer on the back/heel
Flat knife to prise the sole off
Find and replace batteries?

To be honest, I never had to do it. My pair has worked well so far. I'm waiting for them to fail to start in.

But, yes. That is pretty much it. A polished butter spreader with a nice round edge is what I would use. And you can use Popsicle sticks or something similar to keep the halves separated as you work. That's a tip I learned from @cavx.

The upper is completely synthetic so keep the heat at a good distance and keep it moving.

The batteries are in the sole.

@RVLF
I've had every type of HC in hand at one time or another. Except the pre-production samples. There are other little changes among the generations.

Well, the batteries are not gonna get replaced as far as I can see.

The battery and circuit board are incased in a plastic block

Those are 2nd gen HC. I got a pair of those that have been sitting upstairs in the box. The ones I could never get the toe unglued. I should check them.

That's a bummer about the battery encasing. You could consider upgrading all the electronics to EL lights or something since you're already opening the shoe. There is also the possibility of replacing the electronics with glow-in-the-dark parts.

Just depends on how far you want to get into it.

Which is why those of us that did electrical upgrades replaced everything. You can't use the factory wiring here.

Slight noob question here thern

Given they sheer enormity of the modding threads - do you per chance know which pages I need to look at?

I've found the shopping list for the V2's but a lot of the links are dead
On page 200, there is a sort of recap, so some of the mods

The thread served it purpose for a time. It is pretty much a mess now.

I sell the clear soles for V2.

Airair does an all EL kit, but not sure about inverters.

Other parts are sourced from various electronics store local to you.

Then YouTube is your best bet for How To tutorials on things like toe slims etc.

And you can always just ask questions here. I check this most days, so if I don't see it (you can call using cavx ), I'll get a notification on my phone.

Got my size 9 out from storage. The ones I couldn't get the toe separated.

They lit right up and are charging right now. So that's fortunate.

I checked the toe area and there seems to be a split in the cloth just under the rim of the sole. So I'll have to be very careful if I want to preserve the upper. Hopefully if I can get the toe-cap and foam out I'll have enough slack to reglue the toe-cloth to the sole. If not, I'll have a pristine set of HC hard parts to work with.

The material is fairly strong, but if it tears, you have problems. Good luck and hope you can sock toes these.
