Hey everybody,long time lurker but first time poster.I'm a member on FX & TRA,so this is old news on those forums but it occurred to me I'd neglected to show & tell here.This is a fairly big & pic-heavy post,so I promise I'm not spamming,there's just a lot to show you all!
This is my scratch built Jedi Killer,inspired by the incredible piece of concept artwork by Lee Oliver in the Art Of TFA book that many of us have attempted to make a reality,including the amazing run by Phoenix Props & other master saber makers.
Yes,totally out of my depth.
I started it in the summer of 2020,during the first lockdown here in the UK.As I work in industry,I'm lucky enough to have access to machines & other equipment; never machined anything before in my life,only ever installed electronics in a Kylo helmet,so had to learn the basics of machining from the ground up on the manual lathe & miller.
...It took me two & a half years to finish.
Build spec is as follows:
*Hilt machined from 6000 series aluminium tubing of various sizes;
*Brass & aluminium-bronze crystal chamber,with real quartz crystal & single Adafruit neopixel;
*Fully custom machined Delrin chassis,removable back end;
*Golden Harvest v3 phase 4 soundboard;
*Smugglers Outpost 28mm Dark Side speaker;
*KeepPower 18650 removable battery;
*Switchcraft 2.1mm recharge port;
*Shtok Custom Worx 10-pole pcbs for chassis connections;
*KR Sabers in-hilt pcb;
*Blue illuminated power switch from JQ Sabers;
*1" blade (KR Sabers blade side pcb,5050 LED strips x 2,TCSS diffusion foam,nylon diffusion tube,1" transwhite blade & parabolic tip);
*KRORssguard blade plug from KR Sabers in 1" transwhite tube,with 2-LED illuminated blade pcb from JQ Sabers;
*Custom rotary Delrin kill key with red knurled M4 screw head;
*Custom resin cast cosmetic button heads (power button blue,later changed to cloudy/clear,aux button in black),using the ones from my Korbanth Crossguard 2 kit as the base model.
I had the hilt anodised by AA Anodising here in the UK,used some brass & black enamel paints for accents as you can see,& weathered the whole thing with the stainless steel brush head on my rotary tool.
The pics:
I'll leave you with the saber next to the art it grew from- it was a heck of a learning curve,& a real labour of love & hate.It was very much a team build in effect,as I had SO much help from numerous genius workmates regarding setup,approach & tooling etc,also tons of support & helpful advice from fellow members over on TRA- you guys all know who you are,THANK YOU.
...& I'm just so relieved it actually worked in the end!YouTube demo links at the bottom,hope they're permissible.
Thanks for looking,everybody- MTFBWY.
