Gunn's 'Sidekick' Costume...

Hey All,

So after lurking on this fine forum for a few months I have taken the plunge and decided to make my own costume.
Being the kind of person I am, I made the choice of doing something unique... (scary for a first timer, right?)

The premise is an ex-solder (special forces type) finding his home town/city ruined by crime, makes his own armor and becomes 'SideKick" ... (ok, so a Batman/Punisher mix-up). The other little bit of info is that my son is having a costume made for his birthday by my sister (she makes children's clothing), thus I'll be his 'SideKick' for his birthday and Halloween...

So this is the breakdown...

  • Modified Cpt. America Helmet (thanks to JFCustom), I'm only keeping the eye-piece and building from it.
  • Modified chest pdo (not sure where I picked that one up from, will search and credit later, honest).
  • Self made shoulder and arm pieces
  • Self made back support with magnets (for holding of Katana)
  • Tactical Pants
  • Rash guard - long sleeved
  • Gloves (either MMA or padded mechanic style)
  • Boots (heavy duty, I might add some gators)
  • Scarf (army style)

So far I have made the mask, chest pieces and the cut out of the arm and shoulders (pictures to follow). I have the tactical pants, boots, rash guard, gloves and scarf and the designs for the back pieces but am a little stuck on how to get the back pieces and chest together. I was thinking of a tactical jacket or waistcoat and wearing a long sleeved rash guard underneath (trying to keep the theme of an ex-army turned crime fighter), but am unable to find anything suitable, maybe I'll have to make that as well... I want it to have the buckles and clips to make it look right but it still needs a platform to bond to.

The other item is the Katana (well Bokken to be precise), that will have a custom strap on the blade that hides magnets in and will then attach to the magnets in the back supports. Thus no need for a sheath and should be easily available when fighting crime, plus cool looking (I hope!)

Trying to make the armor out of EVA foam and hot-glue for bonding, then PVA glue coat, plasti-dip, primer and finally paint. All sounds daunting but I'm up for a challenge...

Only thing is, I'm not sure what color to go for...

(Mod's, if this is in the wrong section then I apologize and please move to the right part)

**Long overdue update and picture post**

As usual, life got in the way but progress is being made on the outfit (I have a deadline to complete it!).

At present all the foam parts have been cut and trimmed so the front and back of the flak jacket is ready to be glued together. There are also shoulder and arm protection pieces that are ready for paint, as well as a mask. And i'm still trying to figure out how to attach the Bokken, latest idea is to use rare earth magnets (ordered) but I'm doubtful as to how strong they will be. I did think about using an electromagnet but it would run hot and that's not a good idea.

I still have to coat in glue, primer and paint but it's getting there... :)
