After rushing my first Groot mask as I only had a week until Birmingham MCM comic con, I've started work on version 2 with more of a focus on making it actually look like Groot.
Here's my first attempt: (Please take into consideration that it was the first time I'd ever worked with foam or in fact created any mask)

I used only an extendible craft knife to make it and have since invested in a Dremel and some small detail silicone grinding stones.
It went down quite well at comic con and I even had people asking for selfies with me which was strange.
One thing I have realised is that Groot doesn't feature in Guardians of the Galaxy anywhere near as much as I'd like and when he does it's usually from a distance. There are very few close up head shots so it's hard to get good reference pictures of his face to help with detail.
Using the reference shots and 6 pieces of A4 paper stuck together I was able to create a template last night which I will be cutting out and adjusting if necessary tonight. As it's a free hand sort of build there is a certain amount of room for creative license, however I want to get as accurate as I can and my OCD definitely kicked in last night. I also had to remember to give myself a little more room at the top and bottom of the template so that I can remove more foam where necessary, as you well know that it's much harder to add extra foam afterwards.
