Green Lantern Movie Ring

Those "press" rings are replica castings. The real rings do not have a split back and they have a hole in the center of the metal to let light through the center gem. You can see the light through the center go dark as Hal closes his hand around the ring in the trailer.

The center metal ring should be silver.
I noticed the center ring's color immediately and knew it was wrong. As for the split band, that's so it can be adjustable for different ring sizes. Means I'll be able to wear it IF I can ever get my hands on one.

As for the hole in the center that isn't there, that makes sense for the movie production. Would give them all sorts of options for lighting it up. :cool

I'm assuming that it's accurate except for the couple things you pointed out?

I wouldn't be too worried, give it a couple months and factories all over Thailand and Mexico will be churning those out. They look fairly cheap.

I have seen the actual movie ring and I am really hoping DC Direct or another licence holder does the actual prop justice and not some polystone display piece.
That display case shown here looks fantastic and even if a licensed ring does not come with one, it could be easily fabricated by any number of willing RPFers.
In the meantime, if anyone wants to try making a replica movie ring, I would suggest using a 3D imaging program and having the 'green' part made through Shapeways.

Seeing the split back and the brass ring around the center cools my desire to snag one of these. You guys are right- we can do better.

I wouldn't be so sure about the brass ring just yet - the shot of Reynolds holding the ring may not show it well due to lighting.
From what I've seen of the actual prop ring, that center ring IS a different color than the center dome...

im no gl superfan here, but i think the lighter center dome is just to give it the effect that its glowing, without leds. just my thoughts on the subject.

Yes. There is supposed to be a crystal behind the dome. There is also a round hole in the metal band so that light can pass through.
Regarding the promo ring we have been drooling over - I wouldn't be suprised if that is a prototype for the actual licensed ring we will eventually be seeing. The display case may be different, but I considering all the other promo material that was sent out looks to be commercial merchandise, I would think the ring is too.

Folks, if anyone here does any work and makes rings...please keep me in the loop. I would love to have a wearable GL ring. Showed my students the GL trailer, so I'm doing my part to shine the light. Thanks!

I'm sure there is already someone scheming on how to do it. If I had the know-how, I would have been on it already since I have some specific information on the actual prop that I am grateful to be privy to.
I am really hoping though that a licensed replica will be faithful to the original prop. I think I speak for everyone here when I state how much we all hate when licensed props are altered or innacurate from the original.

hmm plastic glued to metal ring.. at least they could have made them glow with a micro led..
well those pics do give me some clues to the ring..

If there is anyone here that is well suited to do this ring, it is you Megatron.
As I suggested previously, the plastic parts should be designed digitally and made using rapid-prototyping technology. And I DO stress when I say plastic pieces

hmm everyone will have there version of the "movie ring" by the time the movie comes out but what about the hard core Corps members..maybe some black Corps and other colors should be there on opening nite?

The problems I see with a plastic top ring is it not something you can wear daily or even a soft stone top. I think the fun time is coming again..

The original "Gem" pieces that where used in the movie where all SLA'd out of Accura60 resin. We eventually cast them in urethane. All had a green candy coat of paint.

And for those of us that don't know machinist's lingo, what does "SLA'd" mean? :confused

Hmm. That's interesting. Perhaps he was bidding on the job? They went through 20+ versions of the ring before they decided on the final design.

However, I can emphatically tell you with 100% certainty we made the movie rings. Nexnox did all the CNC work, and we made a LOT of them.

I thought they only got to version 8 or 9! :ninja

I know version 7 only made it like 20 mins though...
