So I consider myself to be something of a horror film buff. I'm usually up for anything from foreign films, to independent, to cheesy B-flicks, shaky-cam, etc...How about some recommendations old and new?

I'll check out obscure stuff fo sho.

Just to rattle off some ones I loved:

Secquestrados (Kidnapped)
Let the Right One in
Time Crimes
Mother's Day re-make
Silent House
Babysitter Wanted

I recommend you stay far, far away from The Devil Inside. It was quite possibley the worst movie I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot of bad movies). When the clerk at the ticket counter asks "are you sure?" when you ask for tickets to a movie, then tells you to "try and enjoy it," it's a big sign. At the end of the movie, everyone just sat in their seats with this look of utter horror on thier faces- Not because the movie was scary, but because they realized they just wasted their money and time.

As for recommending some good ones... well it's been so long since I've seen a good one... And I love horror movies! These days it just seems like outrageously gory torture porn (which appears to finally be on it's way out), lame looking CGI (CGI only scares me when it's Jar-Jar) or "found footage" movies that we all know are fake and I think have over stayed thier welcome.

But I like some of the stuff on TV- American Horror Story and Walking Dead have been fun. So those are my recommendations :D

Parasite Eve based on the novel is good, not really scary but it's entertaining. I don't know how accurate is as I have yet to see a translated version of the novel. It's the "Japanese Incident" mentioned in the first playstation game. I'm not much into horror anymore like darthgordon said it's all torture porn or crap like that. Even the remakes of the horror movies seem to aim to be gorier than needed.

House of the Devil was good, haven't got a chance to sit and watch Fraility.

And I have heard the Devil Inside is crap so I'll stay away!

If you haven't already, I'd recommend checking out "Pontypool". One of the most original horror/suspense films I've seen in a while. I watched it on NetFlix a few weeks ago, not sure if it's still up, but it's worth searching for.

Devil, which came out a couple years ago was enjoyable, Still a big fan of Poltergeist, and The Frighteners. I really enjoyed the first Paranormal Activity, it's one of those like it or hate it movies like Blair Witch, witch I did not like. The Cube and 13 Ghosts were video treats as I call them. Any Movie where a Lawyer is cut in half VERTICALLY and not the traditional bisect down the middle by a glass door, Heheheheheheheh.

I quite like Identity, a mystery thriller from 2003 starring John Cusack and Ray Liotta. A friend and I are usually pretty good at figuring out the "whodunit" long before it's revealed in a movie, and this one kept us guessing right to the end.

And if you're looking for a fun horror thriller there's 1408 from 2007, also starring John Cusack. For me it was the film equvalent of a roller coaster--it probably won't scare you, but it's still fun to take the ride.

It's more of a suspense film, but I love "The Gaslight", starring Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman. Another one I recommend is "Dead of Night". It starts off slowly, then picks up. There's a payoff at the end, and I thought I was going to pee my pants. There's also a great prop I hope to build someday - a dummy named Hugo.

If you are into books, I know of a pretty good one. The guy that wrote it comes into the comic book shop I frequent and does a few events there. It is based on Egyptian mythology and the werewolf/vampire legends. You can find them on Amazon, "TIMELESS CONFLICT". I would love to see these as a movie or a graphic novel...
