Got a gift, sure it's a recast, what do I do?

My wife bought me an IronMan helmet from a mutual friend that got it from the bay and I'm sure its a recast of the Museum Replicas mark III. What is the protocol. Do I have to drop it off a building?

I assume a recaster on ebay won't take returns, SO It's been paid for - damage is done. Don't re-sell it, but enjoy it - no point destroying it IMO.

Post a picture. Don't feel sorry. Everyone has bought a recast, it's the buying one knowingly that gets frowned upon.

If it's a kit, paint it up, display it proudly for the gift that it is, enjoy it and don't give yourself or the wife a hard time about it.

Whatever you do, don't reprimand your wife for doing something nice for you, it was after all, a lovely gesture.

Yes, recasting SUCKS, it's very bad, blah blah blah blah blah.....so if you really can't stand it in your collection, just say your thank you's, leave it a little while and then quietly get rid of it, without any big 'song and dance' routine...then buy another, more acceptable to your ethics, non-recast version.

Honestly, whatever you decide to do, it's not worth falling out with your missus over.

It's only a bit of plastic at the end of the day.

It's an unpainted, somewhat thin slush cast kit. I'll take some pics when I get home. It will need to be fiberglass reinforced because I feel like I'm going to crush it like a egg. I have to hold it somewhat gingerly. It's not that fragile but if I were to drop it it would shatter like glass.

I think I'll paint it up and use it as an autograph helmet. I'll see if I can get Frank Cho to autograph it this weekend at Heroscon. He drew a lot of The Mighty Avengers IIRC, so thats Iron Man related.

just keep it and go own. Remember you don't need anyone's permission to do anything unless your 12 years old. It kills me that people feel like they need to ask the RPF for permission when spending their own money or when gifts are concerned.

I do feel dirty.

I expected the protocol to be
1. make mold
2. make second helmet
3. destroy first helmet and take pics
4. post pics of destroyed helmet to the RPF in a self righteous post about how you won't stand for a recast to be in your home.


In reality I just was curious with recasting being such a touchy subject.
