God of War Chaos Blades Hand Sculpted / Resin Cast SKS Props - Updated 6/28/18

So I crafted some quick foam God of War Chaos Blades not long ago, which were very cost effective and extremely light. But since then I decided to make a set of super detailed display blades too. These are all hand made and cast in resin. Where the foam blades weighed 7.4 oz each these clock in at about 3.5 pounds each. I am going to try some casts in the future using micro balloons and smooth ons skinning foam just to see if I can get the weight down a little more.
Anyway here are the steps I took to bring these blades to life.

I tried to scale them to the size I saw fit. There are several toys and replicas folks that have made but I thought they were a little to small (19-20"), I drew mine out to be around 24" from tip to tip.

I used 1\4" sintra and apoxi sculpt to create the blade. Once the apoxi sculpt had fully cured I used a spindle sander and rotary tool to create all of the complex curves on the edges. This technique gave me a great base to apply monster sculpt to detail the handle and demon head.

God Of War Chaos Blades - Monster clay was used to create the demon face. This is an oil based clay that doesn't dry out so your working time is as long as it needs to be. Using a mini convection oven to melt the clay it is built up then refined using my hands and traditional sculpting tools.

God Of War Chaos Blades - The handle is a lightly sanded pvc pipe that is once again cavered with monster clay and detailed to resemble the game art. I did decide to leave the pommel off because the design is different between GOW 1 and GOW 4. So that collectors have a choice I will be sculpting and molding that separate then the buyer can choose which version they would like on their blade.

God of War Chaos Blades - I decided to box mold the weapon so that the blade wouldn't have any issues with warping or deforming during the curing phase. I used Plasticine clay for the separation line and foam core for the mold walls.

God of War Blades of Chaos - Once the box mold was finished I used some good ole smooth on Rebound 25 ( because i have a ton of it in the shop and it has never failed me )
I used about 3/4 of a gallon kit to complete both halves

God of War Blades of Chaos - I cut out some additional sintra board to act as my mother mold and made sure to leave a foot on it so that it could stand on its own.

First couple tests were cast using smooth ons onyx not a fan of this stuff but I had a free gallon kit on hand so figured I might as well use it. Additional blades will be made out of smooth cast 300
