Re: Need some help with Gilligan

If this is just a one-off for yucks, seriously consider one of the Halloween costumes available:

http://images.google.com/images?gbv=2&hl=en&tbs=isch:1&sa=1&q=gilligan+costume&aq=f&oq=&aqi=&start=0

Otherwise, red rugby shirt with white collar:

http://images.google.com/images?gbv...ugby+shirt+white+collar&aq=f&oq=&aqi=&start=0

White bucket hat (a round one, not the square ones):

http://images.google.com/images?gbv=2&hl=en&sa=1&q=white+bucket+hat&aq=f&oq=&aqi=&start=0

And your on your own for the light blue 60's elephant bell jeans.

Good luck and have fun!

So Rick...something tells me you've already researched this? :lol

For the shoes, I think plain white tie-up Vans are your best bet if you're trying to get accurate.
For the pants I think you could probably get away with a cheap pair of washed out carpenters pants. I've seen many fails at this costume in the past, not because they got the style of clothes wrong, but they didn't have the right "fit". Back then the clothes fit "snugger" and I think to pull off the look you have to keep this in mind. For the pants, I would almost buy a waist size smaller than you normally wear. And don't get the shirt where it's baggy and loose.

Re: Need some help with Gilligan

Nope, these are just the first things that popped up when I Googled it upon seeing the post. Power of the internet, boys!

I would definitely order the hat from bobdenver.com if it's available - haven't seen one that close to the original anywhere else.

Re: Need some help with Gilligan

Hi, newbie here but I thought I'd put my $.02 into this. I always thought that Gilligan's hat was a US Navy "dixie cup" with the brim turned down. I could be mistaken but I swear that I've seen some pics of Gilligan back in HI before the 3 hour tour and he was wearing a "dixie cup".

Re: Need some help with Gilligan

If he did, it was only early on. Mostly he wore the slouchy white bucket/tennis hat. Perhaps the confusion comes from the fact that he turned the brim up on the bucket.

Check out the stitching - same hat, brim worn differently.

Re: Need some help with Gilligan

This is totally OT but I am going to do it anyway:
MY Dad was in SanDiego for Navy training after enlisting for the Korean war. They had just done fire training and his Navy sailors cap was all sooty and grey. So to clean it up he put it in a bucket of pure bleach, to whiten it. Instead it was eroded to just the thickest stitched parts. So like any thinking private, he hid it. Problem was his Sargent found it, and discovered Private John was the enterprising idiot with the bucket of Clorox. Sarge then made my Dad carry that bucket(with hat) for the rest of his boot camp.

Re: Need some help with Gilligan

i think its an appropriate story for a gilligan thread.
As an update i pulled the trigger on a shirt and a pair of bell bottoms i found. I may end up being baggy though despite the advice just because i was hesitant to order too small online without being able to try it on.

still waiting to hear back on the hat from the bob denver site

There are also: First time eating pizza, meeting(and eating dinner with) Perry Mason, meeting Lewis and Martin, and many others from that time. But they do not fit the Gilligan thread. :)

Re: Need some help with Gilligan

the shoes are boater shoes
but i will admit white vans will do the trick

the shirt is probably the hardest to find cause its such a rare style
personally id make it if i couldn't find one

That could be it, kind of hard to say without seeing what a "dixie cup" looks like with the brim turned down. Thinking about it now it's possible that the brim on the "dixie cup" might be too short and stiff to look like Gigligan's hat when the brim is turned down.

Re: Need some help with Gilligan

Not to beat a dead horse here, but the brim on a US Navy hat is too tubular, if that makes sense. If it was inverted, the brim would essentially go straight down. My dad was in the Navy, and I used to play with his hat when I was a kid, including turning it inside out. It did not look like Gilligan's hat. And Gilligan's hat has a button at the top of the crown. I think it was really a style of tennis hat that was popular at the time, which was often referred to as an Australian tennis hat.

Make sure you post pics when you get your costume together.

Although I really don't think the dixie cup was the hat (his official sites even says so), I will say that a well worn, broken in dixie cup and be very flexible and does indeed look rather like Gilligan's when flipped. Again, the hat needs to be really broken in, but that's something that many sailors take pains to do when they buy a new one. I used to soak mine in water and then depending on whether I wanted it to retain a certain shape or not I would either role it down or shape it until dry or constantly work it while it was drying.
