Giger Alien '79 head in progress

The dome looks really good! It dose'nt have to much silver to kill the inside
details, and it does'nt have too much black on the edge's as well! So what are you doing for the back of the head? Are you going to leave the dome removable, or glue in place?

Oh, and thanks to everyone for posting the referance pics! I've not seen alot of these before!

When I visited Bob Burns he claims the domes were clear and the perspiration from the actor made the dome fog except for the stunt head. One of his Aliens has a clear dome, while yellowed you can see that it's not painted. All of the replicas have been fogged except for the 1/2 scale that I have, it looks tinted.

A guy in Germany has the bodies for sale, but he was wanting around $2500, not bad, but for $4000 you could get an HGC and replace the head.

I'm leaving the dome removeable. It's thin enough on the rear to just let it blend into the body of the rear of the head. I don't plan on tampering with the seam. I airbrushed black on both the dome and below the junction and it's pretty invisible. :) I agree that several head domes were left clear and have since yellowed, but there is no doubt that that dome has been silvered intentionally in the narcissus scene. :)

Dude that is killer. Making me want to paint mine, but those freehand ovals down the side scare the bejezus out of me. I would mist the front of the dome with some black starting from the bottom edge. I think you should only see a hint of eyes and nose. What colors are you using? Specifically for the top half of the skull? I suspect that Giger just started airbrushing black over the raw brown latex for the rest but areas do look gray at times.

I first sprayed black and a bone white for the upper and lower sections of the head. Then did the dark details using black mixed with a touch of brown. I highlighted areas that got too much dark with silver and brought out some of the black sections with silver highlights.

The way I did the ovals was to pencil them directly onto the bone section. until I achieved the overall shape I wanted, then just used black to follow my pattern. Not so hard really. Highlighted the places that got too wide or too dark.

applied the bare metal to the teeth and I don't like it. Looks like aluminum foil. I truly need to bondo and smooth the teeth prior to doing the chrome. Every little bump and groove shows up horribly with the metal applied. Back to the drawing board. :)

All the teeth in the kit I got are way too irregular. The uppers are obvious re-sculpts. The lowers appear original, but are boogered up in a few spots. I think smoothing them and re-applying the foil should work. Time will tell.

I still can't believe that those ridges down the sides of the skull part are actually painted.

My dream version would be a combination of the ALIEN and ALIENS skull, basically the ALIENS skull with the human skull at the front and then the clear dome on top.

they did a similar look in one of the later films, except the omitted the human skull face which I believe is a huge mistake. that totally makes it creepy. The skull look to the newborn was very Giger-esque, I don't know why they didn't do the warriors with a similar skull at the front. Nothing is creepier than that skull and clear dome in my opinion.

That's all well and good, but talk less and post more pics please.:love

That alien head makes my Giger happy. Great job.

For those that considered foil for the teeth: You might want to try metal repair tape. It is aluminum foil with an adhesive back. You can find it with or without the fibers in it (without is much smoother). It is a ***** to work with in big pieces, but tooth size should be workable.

Yes, the skull is the greatest addition that later versions removed.

Bare metal foil also have an adhesive back and I would think thinner than tape.

yeah, I agree on the tape, I have foil tape and it won't burnish flat like the bare metal will. Adhesive is better though. :)
